Madeline Albright, Jim Leach to represent Obama at G20 meeting
Edited on Wed Nov-12-08 11:59 AM by babylonsister
this weekend. Breaking on m$nbc.

Prior to this, Obama wasn't going or sending anyone, so I guess this is a good thing.

1. I think it is a good thing, and having Leach a republican, and Albright a Democrat
represent him is an excellent symbolism

2. Any word on why he isn't going?
Albright's and Leach, though I have some issues with him, are pretty good surrogates, but...not the Real Thing.

3. Because he's not president yet and doesn't want to step on any toes. Plus,

7. I was thinking it might be a good opportunity to meet a lot of folks he needs to meet ...
quickly by spending a day there.

No, I wouldn't agree to anything, just as FDR wouldn't sign anything Hoover wanted him to sign.

11. I originally thought that, too, but think this is a better course for Obama.
The European leaders are clamoring to meet him, but he's holding off. Surrogates will have to work for now.

12. He's certainly got a lot on his plate. I can see why he would and why he would not attend. nt

13. Obama said he wouldn't go from the get-go. He is not president, and AFAIK,
the dim one didn't invite him.

Like I said above, I imagine Obama wants to stay removed from whatever Bush is involved in, including this.

5. I'm glad to hear this. There is every reason that someone from
the new administration be in attendance. Time is too short and too valuable not to have advisers with full knowledge of what is being discussed. The choice was good. Obama can't really express himself as he would like at this transition stage but his representatives will be in a good place to fill him in on everything. I'm impressed. Ms Albright has always been one of my favorites, calling things as they are.

6. ALbright?
Wouldn't somebody from his economic team be better suited? I do not know what Leach's expertise is.

9. She's got int'l experience and probably knows a lot of these people.
She can take notes. They're not there to set policy anyway, just to be a presence.

14. Good move. Respected, knowledgeable and I believe moderate, representatives.
The Obama team seems to be hitting all the right notes.
