1. I've thought that for years. One problem, though.

It takes a lot of money to set up think tanks and foundations. People with a lot of money tend to be conservative for obvious reasons.

3. Here's a book that might be of interest . . .
The Elite Consensus
By George Draffan
Blurbs

Financial and business corporations throw millions of dollars at think tanks, lobbyists and universities, exploiting writers and artists galore. Their assignment? To twist words, gnarl symbols, sell lies, whip people into line. The Elite Consensus fingers the American Enterprise Institute, the Council on Foreign Relations, the Chamber of Commerce, the Heritage Foundation, and many other "educational" corporations, which men of property have unleashed on this planet. The author shows how these corporate con artists teach us our history, elect our representatives, write our laws, define ideas and frame public policy debates. Originally published in 2000 by Blue Mountains Biodiversity Project as The Corporate Consensus.

Remember George Lakoff's Rockridge Institute? Gone, for lack of funding.

5. Thanks for the suggestion.
Looks like a fascinating read. I've never read any of Draffan's independently written books, only his collaborations with Derrick Jensen.

4. It doesn't have to cost lots of money
There are way more thinkers on DU than in all of the Rethug think tanks. A Virtual Think Tank may be just as effective - afterall the most informative comments during the campaign came from bloggers, and not,M$Greedia who got it wrong from the primaries and never recovered.

6. You're right.
The most informative comments did come from bloggers. Perhaps that indicates a massive shift away from the moribund, brick and mortar think tanks to the blogosphere serving as one gigantic, loosely connected virtual think tank. That's a welcome development.
