Yesterday on The O’Reilly Factor, Bill O’Reilly did a segment on the consternation in California over the Prop. 8 same-sex marriage ban. O’Reilly said Barack Obama’s election has “emboldened secular progressives” on issues like gay marriage. The “cultural war issues,” he said, will only get worse:

I don't see how there could be a link between gay marriage and unrestricted abortion.

But I do like the idea of the revocation of the Patriot Act, could that be expanded to revoking the No Child Left Behind act too?

but not for those fucking dumbass reasons that have NOTHING to do with gay marriage...

It all seemed so easy when these odious little measures were getting written up and introduced. The first few states passed them overwhelmingly as people gleefully voted to deny the humanity of some of their fellow citizens. Kept collecting their taxes, though. Funny that.

But then something kind of unexpected happened. People began focusing on the issue, and began talking about it. Some people changed their mind. Other people decided that the benefits of society should be available to all their fellow citizens. The margin of victory for these little acts of bigotry began shrinking. California passed Prop 8 by only 3%, mostly driven by older voters, who will no longer be participating in the electoral system in another 10 or 15 years. If state constitutions can be amended, those amendments can be repealed. And as a new generation ages into the power years, new sensibilities will emerge, and these battles will be joined again.

My money's on the people who oppose you, Mr. O'Reilly. Have a nice, long, increasingly bitter life, you old hack.
