It's official, Budweiser is no longer a "Real American" beer

Belgium's InBev (INB.BT) completed its $52 billion acquisition of U.S. brewer Anheuser-Busch Cos. (BUD) Tuesday following regulatory approval from China, the last remaining hurdle for the deal, earlier in the day.

InBev paid $70 a share for Anheuser-Busch's shares, which stopped trading at the close of business Monday, ending the U.S. company's 150 years of independence.

46. That's the UK version of Bud
"McEwans is the best buy, the best buy, the best buy!" was their slogan. Notice it's not the best beer - that's because it's the cheapest beer you can buy, and the quality matches the price. Having said that, it's still much better than Bud or Miller.

67. I'm not really concerned about the beer, but why aren't we putting
the kibosh to selling our American companies to foreign interests? Once upon a time our domestic commercial industries and manufacturing were protected from foreign acquisition. We need to get back to that.

33. Yep
and it costs relatively little to ship malt and hops, a lot to ship glass bottles full of fluid. That's one of the many reasons I buy local! The best thing of all is to use your own refillable half-gallon bottle, commonly called a "growler", if you're lucky enough to have a craft brewer on the way home from work, that's very little energy cost to get some good brew in your life!

I tried some of the Terrapin Golden Ale when I was down in the Carolinas last month, pretty tasty! I've been looking forward to the Sweetwater, my beer websites tell me good things about it.

8. Just had a six pack of "American Ale"
by that company recently. And while I do not consider myself a beer snob, this stuff wasn't all that good. What will they call it now? Belgian/American Ale? No matter. I tried it, didn't care for it, and that's all.

36. Ditto
I had some, too, because not all the supermarkets around here have a good commitment to craft brew (one of the many reasons I miss the Pacific Northwest!) and I gave it a shot.

It's best to seek out the beer stores that specialize in good brews, sometimes the supermarkets cater mainly to mass interests. Perhaps you could contact the person in charge of the beverage department, chances are he/she deals with a distributor who handles some craft beer. Hop prices are falling due to a good harvest this year, the price raises we've seen for quality ale over this last year should moderate in response. Cheaper diesel will help, too.

New Belgium, Odell, Left Hand, etc. etc. etc.

Real beer!

Oh, and the last time I bought Budweiser, it actually went by the name Czechvar here in North America. This is the real Budweiser, made in the town of Budweis in the Czech Republic. Decent beer too! Anheuser Busch stole the name a century ago.

56. Try some brews from Southern Tier if you get the chance -
http://www.southerntierbrewing.com/index2.html

They're out of Lakewood, NY (southwestern part of the state), and make some fantastic varieties.

I've learned so much, just visiting some of the beer review sites over the past year or two, and am lucky enough to have some excellent stores nearby carrying an awesome selection of micro-brews. I'd never cared much for the big macros at any point in my life, and now, you couldn't pay me enough to drink one of those garbage beers...

23. Assuming they keep the jobs here
I'd say it's no loss, may be an improvement.

They're a big part of the reason why people around the world swear we have terrible beer here. True, we have our share, but there are alot of american brew companies that turn out quality products. Shiner, New Belgium, Sam Adams, Dog Fish head, Yuengling, and probably dozens of others I can't think of at the moment, these all produce in my opinion expert brews. Maybe this will give the little guys a better chance to compete nationally, being able to claim to be real american beers.

InBev is a very large international company which also does business in China, it's common for deals like this to need approval from various large countries so they don't get accused of monopoly practices later.
