Blogger's demands met in wake of Subways food chain franchisee donation to "Yes on 8" campaign
International food chain responds to blogger's demands, franchisee retracts gift, job protections added

"One down and many more to go," said Mike Rogers of BlogActive.com in response to the successful result of pressure on the fast food chain Subway after it was disclosed that a franchisee gave $2,500 to the Yes on 8 campaign. Yes on 8 was successful in removing marriage equality from California's state constitution.

Rogers found the contribution on a list of Yes on 8 contributors compiled by the Human Rights Campaign. "When I saw a franchisee of an international company gave $2,500 to opponents of equality, I immediately knew I would require someone at the company's world HQ to address this."

On Friday, Rogers made three demands of the company, with a Monday deadline:

1. Repudiate the gift.
2. Add sexual orientation and gender identity to the corporation's non-discrimination policy.
3. Give an equal gift to the opposing side.

At the time of the post, Rogers did not indicate the company, choosing instead to approach the company discreetly over the matter.

In a conversation with Rogers today, Subway Director of Corporate Communications Michele DiNello responded to the three demands.

1. Why the hell would a company like that do such a stupid thing??
It seems like one of the dumbest moves I have ever read about.

3. Rogue Subways franchisee, kind of like Rogue Sarah Palin but with veggies, oil & vinegar
Same thing that made Palin go off script when she was a cog in the wheel of the McCain campaign, not "the campaign."

Further reading at the link in my O.P. brings us to the comments of Subway's Director of Corporate Communications, who wrote "it occurred to me after chatting with him (the franchisee who made the donation) that there that there may be others who don't understand what the policy is, so we will be sending to our franchisees and developers -- around the world -- the policy regarding political donations"...

I believe that Subway's and every other organization of its kind has a policy on such matters, but it's like anything else in life...how many of the franchisees who receive the gi-normous "Policy Binder" actually read it? And if they did, there's always the "dog ate my homework" defense.

2. It should be pointed out here, in fairness, that all Subways are individual franchise operations
So the homophobic asshat who made this contribution may own one Subway, or even a few of them, but this should not be taken as speaking for the entire chain, or your local Subway (unless it happens to be one owned by this phobe.)

That said, it's good that they got a positive response from Subway corporate headquarters.

4. Corporate Subways, IMHO, stepped up and took care of business.
I'm sure that seeing the corporate name in the headlines wasn't pleasant, but they stepped up quickly and did the right thing.
