Pet Food Recall: UPDATED - Pet Owners should keep checking list.
I just found out that several brands have been added over the weekend - and it may not be over. Pet owners should keep checking the list until it appears that all brands have been identified.

Recall info here:

If you find a brand on the list that you've used, click on it and it will give you more specific info (item codes & expiration dates are how they identify the tainted lots).

Good luck!! Hope no one else finds their pet has been eating anything on the list!

9. I haven't seen a thing about cans
I have cans of Mighty Dog in cans, some with the gravy and all I can find is problems with the dog food in pouches. I just checked Purina's website. I may need to call these people. I don't want to poison the doggies.

11. You might want to check the list - Purina and Science Diet were added & I know that
Science Diet were cans (I had some on the shelf - the expiration dates didn't match the list, but I'm throwing them out anyway, I don't care).

checked again on purina. I have the link for others. So far, so good. Still won't be feeding any of the gravy ones for another week. Just to make sure they haven't changed their minds.

25. I looked for that too. That's what my cat eats.
This is very upsetting. I can't imagine what kind of contamination must be in this food to cause such immediate kidney failure in both cats and dogs.

6. So far, my brand hasn't been listed. To be on the safe side
I'm going to only give my girls dry food for now and suspend any of the wet foods since they keep updating their list. The ones I've used might show up at a later date.

7. Second time Wal-Mart has been involved in one of these recalls
The previous one was peanut butter - branded as the Wal-Mart brand, then as other name brands.

Gee, do you think that in order to meet the cheap Wal-Mart prices, brand integrity has been compromised?

If I were one of the other companies and this was the case (e.g., Peter Pan) I would be LIVID.

12. I wonder if this hasn't been happening before now.
We had to put our cat down about 4 years ago because of kidney failure. Seems I recall getting Iams at Pet Smart and she didn't like it. But she was 16 anyway. Still....I miss her.

I feel bad for all you pet owners out there, be careful.

19. I started giving my previous cat Hartz vitamins when she was young - my vet FREAKED out.
Apparently, Hartz has a very bad reputation within the veterinary community but nothing concrete has come to life yet. So, I stopped - but she'd already had them for about 6 years. When she was 12 she died from pancreatic cancer - and I wondered if that had anything to do with the vitamins, so I know how you feel. There's no way to tell and I'm sure there's always a chance of getting a bad bag or can, but still.

I'm sorry for your loss!

It has caused kidney failure.

32. I was also using their flea & tick collars - that caused both my vet tech and vet to react!
I stay clear of ANYTHING from Hartz now - except for their little pink brush, it's the only brush I can find that really works on cat hair. I can't see any harm in that though!

15. I am being safe, rather than sorry ~~
ALL the canned food got tossed at my house. Tho I usually do NOT feed my dog, year-and-half old Scottish Terrier, canned food, I do keep it around as a back up. She gets kibble mixed with chicken I cook myself or at times, canned tuna or chicken (people products only). Who knows where this is going to end?

So, in the trash today went EVERY bit of canned food.

Hopefully this won't extend to dry food :( I've been keeping my eye on it just in case, and passing it on to everyone I know. What an awful situation.

I've always used a pouch of Mighty Dog to supplement my dogs' evening meal and now I find out the Mighty Dog pouches have been added to the list.

Jeezil Pete, don't these pet food companies have anything called QUALITY CONTROL??? How could they switch to a new supplier and not check to make sure this new supply wasn't freakin' POISON? Let me guess - they went to a cheaper supplier so their shareholders could squeeze out another nickel!

At this point I have to ask WHAT IS SAFE FOR OUR PETS TO EAT???

18. Here are signs of trouble to look for:
Signs of Trouble
Experts advise owners to call their veterinarian if a pet has eaten recalled food and shows symptoms of possible kidney failure. An animal could be in trouble if it:

· Stops eating
· Appears tired and lifeless
· Seems excessively thirsty
· Urinates much more than usual
· Vomits
· Has diarrhea
· Seems to have abdominal pain


If your pet displays any of these symptoms, it's best to have them checked out just to be safe.

20. Now I know why my dog, Winston got sick
I supplemented his dry with the packet of OlRoy, he is a smaller dog, so it affected him more than it did my other two dogs.

:(

2 days at the vet, IV of fluids and antibiotics and $500.00 later, he is better and I AM NEVER FEEDING HIM OLROY

22. I'm so sorry - but I'm SO GLAD he's ok now.
Good thing you caught it early enough and took him to the vet.

It's hard to know what to do - I spend extra money on Hills Science Diet because I figure that's safer and better for my cat than some of the others - and then that winds up on the list too!!

24. I'd start making my own food for my pups, but it's not very easy
cooking for myself in my present living conditions. I don't know how I would go about cooking for them too.

I just called my vet's office to note for the chart that his ailment may well have been the dog food and not the scraps of steak he was given (she lectured me about feeding him human food).

Seems like anything these days is vulnerable to contamination!

28. One of my pups did have some diarrhea and vomiting the other day
However, I think it was the bag of goodies he got out of a backpack - doesn't have any the other symptoms, and he is frisky, lively, and hungry. They eat a small amount of Pro-Plan mixed with their dry food each day. They love it - we called PetSmart and they said Pro Plan should be fine, though I believe it's manufactured by Purina.

27. I'd advise everybody to cross their fingers and stick to kibble
for now. The cat or dog probably won't care as long as there's enough of it.

I still haven't seen a word about what the contaminant is.

29. This sort of thing is what's wrong with the way we "do business"
these days. When EVERYONE uses the same sources (due to consolidation and more consolidation), this sort of thing is more likely to happen...and not only to pet foods.

There is safety in diversity.
