I am a volunteer dog rescuer, and right now I have2dogs of my own and tworescues that are up for adoption. (And one little old cat of 19 years!) I've always been very careful what I feed the furkids, and NEVER buy off brand food. The scarey thing on this list is that Iams and Nutro are also named! They are both FAR FROM generic pet foods!

I am fortunate thought that nothing I haveat my house is on this list!

I saw this Friday when it broke and have been trying to keep up. My kids feed their dog dry food and so they aren't worried right now. If this changes, a lot of folks will need to know very quickly. I had canned Priority and had to check every can, luckily I had none of the bad dog food. Makes me so mad. If anything had happened to my ten year old poochie, grrrrr.

Reminds me of the Peanut Butter scare that affected both the cheap wal-mart brand and Peter Pan which costs twice as much.

Am I correct in that most of this stuff is the canned or pouch? Is it effecting any of the dry foods?

I use a variety of dry foods for my younger dogs - but none I see on the list. I buy, basically, what's on sale in the bite size.

So my childhood pets that got the table scraps and Milk Bone were better off.

This scared me to death because my cats love the "cuts in sauce" and the puppy usually finds a way to steal their leftovers. :scared:

At some point, I'm just going to have to make their food myself because this is crazy, and as a single person, there aren't enough tablescraps to feed them.

Damn.

The dog food companies want to make us think we are too stupid to be able to feed our dogs. Don't you think that "fresh" food is better than the crap that goes into dog foods? Dogs are as entitled to fresh meat and vegetables as humans are. But; we can't even be sure about human foods anymore! It truly is a scarry time. Sorry to rant, but remember the times when dogs used to live 15-16 years before dog food was ever even heard of? They ate table scraps, which was fresh cooked foods.

damned symptoms that they warn are caused by the bad food. :(

He was at the vets for two days, on IV with antibiotics. It was scarey and awful for him, not to mention the vet bill I wasn't expecting (again). That poor little fellow hates the vet's and he has had a hard time of it. :hug:

Signs of Trouble
Experts advise owners to call their veterinarian if a pet has eaten recalled food and shows symptoms of possible kidney failure. An animal could be in trouble if it:

· Stops eating
· Appears tired and lifeless
· Seems excessively thirsty
· Urinates much more than usual
· Vomits
· Has diarrhea
· Seems to have abdominal pain

I have to take Friday in today for surgery and may ask the vet to keep her until she forgives me. :(

And, there's a line behind her but the problems are straight forward and nothing to do with this. My vet is going to be a rich woman.

Some of these are obvious, others less so. Just thought the info should be out there.

We give him the dry Purina One which, so far, seems to be safe. Which is good cause he will not touch any other dog food.

packaging. It takes a special production line to package that way, and I think that's why you see the "premium brands" there. It's NOT the foodspackaged by THEIR mfg. company, but the food(or formula) they farmed out to Menu Foods so they could have what they THOUGHT the public wanted.

I hope Menu Foods will be able to tell everyone what exactly is the problem with these foods! So far, they've said all the tests they've run show nothing! Not knowing is worse than knowing and curing the problem!

My SO does programming and automation for people food plants. The original manufacturer is often a major label but they will contract to produce other brands for the sake of keeping their expensive equipment making money by running as much as possible.

One of the plants, at least until recently, made their own name brand of processed food and also did a version for Walmart. Not the same recipe nor the same quality ingredients. It would be a mistake for a major manufacturer to make a "generic" product that's as good as the name brand.

For decades nearly all aspirin was made in the same pharmaceutical plant in Norwich, NY. This isn't anything new. Makes sense financially.

That list is just about every food on the market. I feed Nutro Natural Choice.

There doesn't appear to be any affected.

I just started using canned food for my 14-year-old dog recently after he had mouth surgery. I've never been a big fan of canned food for dogs since it seems always to have some taint (recalls, horsemeat, etc) and was freaked out that the month after I start using it for my old man, canned gets recalled.

Luckily, I was using Pedigree lean.

...and he's almost out. I keep hearing it's wet food only, but who can you trust? He may just have to eat people food until this thing is resolved - he'll love that anyway.

I make a big pot of dog food once a week for mine... I do leave dry dog food (Purina One Lamb & Rice) out for them in case they are hungry later in the day. It's easy to make and the dogs LOVE it~ Boil 2 containers of chicken livers in 4 quarts of water, add 1 1/2 cups of rice and 2 cups of fresh frozen mixed vegetables (no onions). I flavor it will a tiny bit of garlic powder. My dogs are very healthy and I've been doing this for years now. I alternate the chicken livers with a pound of lean ground beef for variety. It is actually far cheaper than the quality dog food, and I know that it's fresh! I refrigerate it in a big plastic container and heat up one serving a day for them. Good luck with your older dog... this would be really easy for him to eat and to digest.

My neighbor's dog, Maggie, has been sick for days: diarrhea, vomiting, blood, the works. Ann was introducing Innova into her diet. Wanted to give her something healthy. She tried Innova once before, months ago, same reaction. Vet didn't believe it could have been caused by the food, so Ann tried again. She hasn't slept in three days, taking the dog out every hour of the night.

I feel so badly for anyone who has lost a pet due to this, or has a sick animal. This is an outrage!

Don't get P&G anything folks! They test by vivisection for fucking everything, and there are plenty of alternatives that don't, often better priced.

How many of our family members will ultimately pay the price for this corporate malfeasance.

I heard on the health radio yesterday, they were using dead animals from vets (Euthanize? which is poison and will kill... I can't spell) and grinding them up for pet foods! I tell ya, I was shocked to hear this!!! Corporate whores... anything to bring in the bucks and didn't give a shit about what will happen down the road.

They have all the links to the press releases. They also have a consumer complaints coordinater state-by-state phone number list.

Plese do not call them unless your pet has been affected.

The FDA is investigating this matter, for what it's worth. And the pet food companies, especially Iams, whose products HAVE RESULTED IN ILLNESS, are stepping up to the plate with paying vet bills and researching the underlying problem.

and normally we would all say their products are good. It seems to be one of the suppliers that has caused this, but who knows yet. Demonizing Iams and Eukanuba isn't the answer though.

It's so weird, up until early January I was feeding my dogs Iams dry mixed with a 1/2 can of Iams wet (whatever was on sale - including the cuts 'n' gravy stuff, even though I knew better). Then I decided to make the switch to Breeder's Choice Pinnacle, since it's allergen-free and the Boston Terrier was such a yacker (throws up so easily) and the Beagle had gotten sooo fat (my fault!) The food is only about $5 more per bag, but it made a huge difference. The Boston has not thrown up once, and the Beagle has dropped two pounds already. And such difference in their coats! They are so shiny now!

but the symptoms are consistent with the symptoms listed with this recall.

He has survived, but it was scarey - a couple of days hooked up to IV with fluids and antibiotics plus the vet bill. This happened the first part of the month. I used to supplement the dry with the OlRoy foil packets.

My kitties only get dry food; Snowie (and extremely macho male - NOT!) only hunts wild, dry kibble. He eats it one bit at a time on his mat, acting like it's prey. Don't ask me what goes through that cat's head (air?). My three are all indoor-only cats.

And thank heavens that Wellness dry food still hasn't made the list!

After seeing your list, I was relieved to see the foods I feed my pets were not on there. Purina Cat Chow (dry) and Fancy Feast as well as Alpo's "Come N Get It" dry for the wolf and dogs. (The wolf gets additional chicken quarters.) How awful that so many foods are affected.

I'm suggesting the Dick Van Patten Organic line and the Paul Newman Organics....also Wellness.

I never fed my dogs canned foods until the little one had surgery last Thanksgiving and had to be on soft food for three weeks. After that, he refused all dry food. So, I'm just learning about the canned stuff, having had dogs my whole life, and never feeding them anything but dry before.
I miss the dry foods-- They were more convenient, and he never had diarrhea. i used to mix them with whatever meat/and/or vegetables that I would be having.

it's kept them healthy for 4 years now.

Hopefully Kestrel will check in about this, but I can't think in-and-of-itself, it could be harmful. It has always helped my dog's 'messies'.

Other choices of dry food you may choose to consider are Pro Plan and Eaglepack.

I feed my Belgian Sheepdogs Innova and their stools are firm and well-formed. My two youngest dogs had loose stools recently, but I discovered they had roundworms, so that may have been the cause.

those lactobacillus cultures need to be live and active -- that's what helps restore the natural flora in the intestinal tract and helps the diarrhea.

FWIW, it works for babies and adults too.

In the late 70s while working in a ship yard I noticed on more than one occasion pet food cans in the lower parts of the boats, never saw a cat or rats these were new boats LNG's, times are tougher today so my guess its more prevalent.:(

I was on the phone with them yesterday trying to get more info. They gave me a long list of the flavors with the 3oz wet. The dry is okay...today, at least.

My three cats were just finishing off a box and I tossed the two remaining Chicken Cacciatore; yep that one was on the list so I'm fairly certain that the other flavors in the box were as well.

They told me the CDC (?) was working to determine what was causing the pets to have the reaction, and until they know more they can't really provide info how long it's going to be before I can breathe easier. :scared:

I know of two dogs who just up and died recently. One on site and the other was scheduled to come in and his owner called in tears and told us he'd died. My other boss's cat is very sick right now too.

Spunky was vomiting on and off for a couple of weeks, although he seems ok now. I thought there might be something wrong with the food. Ol’Roy beef flavor in the can. So I started feeding him with people food, chicken & rice. In the meantime my wife bought some Ol’Roy in the pouches, Chicken Teriyaki in gravy & Filet Mignon in gravy. Today was the first I heard of this pet food recall, thanks to this post.

I have only fed my dogs wet food a couple of times.

Also, what garbage... Eukanuba is supposedly one of the "top" dog foods, but it is made in the same factory as other, "lesser" dog foods. Just goes to show you.

I learned more reading here than I did trying to research. The Sweetster likes Dick Van Patton's food and so I was relieved not to find that on the list. My vet has always told me to use dry food so I don't think she has ever had anything but dry. I am sure the canned and pouch food smells good to dogs but YUCK. You can also google and find healthy recipes for your pets.

A couple of years ago we lost our beloved Charlie and Sammie (19 years and 18 year old cats). When they got to where they needed a soft food we were told to grind up the dry and mix it with baby food. I had two coffee grinders-one for coffee and one for them.

Our dog is 12 and when she was a puppy we tried all the expensive dog foods and she didn't like any of them. Tried pedigree one day and she loved it and we fed her that for years. However, we ALWAYS topped her dried food with a healthy portion of chicken or turkey, sometimes fish, sometimes beef, that we were fixing for dinner (though only hubby eats beef these days, ds and I won't because of mad cow concerns). Since our dog is elderly, we took her off the dry food almost a year ago and have been mixing up rice or pasta with a few veggies and either chicken or turkey for her daily meal. She is thriving and ever since I often think of how my dad thought the dog food business was a scam because when he was growing up they always fed their dog table scraps and dogs in those days weren't getting as ill as dogs do these days; just look at how there's a vet on every corner.

and I have been feeding him 2 of the name brands on this list. He has been having seizures for about year now and my other dog seems fine, so I'm hoping his problem isn't because of the food. He's 16 and more than likely the seizures have taken their toll on him, but I would really hate to find out that I poisoned him - no more store bought food in this house.

I feed my dog the dry food. It burns me that a company would allow this to happen. I will change brands for this reason (hopefully the dry is safe). Any thoughts on a dog food company that is reliable. I use to use Science Diet and it is not on the list.
