Teen Commits Suicide Live on Web
Broadcasting his suicide to an Internet audience, Abraham Biggs, a 19-year-old college student in Pembroke Pines, Fla., took a fatal overdose of pills Wednesday. His family is ... horrified his life ended before a virtual audience, and infuriated that viewers of the live webcam or operators of the Web site that hosted it didn't act sooner to save him.

Only after police arrived to find Abraham Biggs dead in his father's bed did the Web feed stop Wednesday — 12 hours after the 19-year-old Broward College student first declared on a Web site that he hated himself and planned to die.
...

A computer user who claimed to have watched said that after swallowing some pills, Biggs went to sleep and appeared to be breathing for a few hours while others cracked jokes.

Some members of his virtual audience encouraged him to do it, others tried to talk him out of it, and some discussed whether he was taking a dose big enough to kill himself, said Wendy Crane, an investigator with the Broward County medical examiner's office.
Some users told investigators they did not take him seriously because he had threatened suicide on the site before.

Eventually, someone notified the moderator of the bodybuilding site, who traced Biggs' location and called police, Crane said. The drama unfolded live on Justin.tv, which allows viewers to post comments alongside the video images.

As police entered the room, the audience's reaction was filled with Internet shorthand: "OMFG," one wrote, meaning "Oh, my God." Others, either not knowing what they were seeing, or not caring, wrote "lol," which means "laughing out loud," and "hahahah."

This is horrifying. How can people be so cruel and unconcerned?

5. because nobody believes anything they see... they thought it was a stunt.

something the guy was doing to get attention... They didn't believe that the kid was really suicidal. But its no better than someone jumping from a bridge.. when it stops traffic, people start yelling, "just do it, so we can move" AND "what are you waiting for, jump... and stop wasting my time and my life." People are cruel and insensitive.. maybe its the animalistic nature of humans.. its perhaps what makes us operate a world that allows people to die because they don't have food to eat or medicine to take for simple ailments like diarrhea.

Even on this seemingly progressive blogging site, people are rude, mean-spirited, and cruel.

11. This is true. I guess he called wolf often, which doesn't help convince people.
Ive read that he went from joking/happy to suicide threats over and over, so it was tough for anyone to gauge the seriousness of this one, this time around. Still, those are some class act assholes that contributed to making fun of him while he died, and after, anyway its spun.

12. I hear you but if I was into that type of thing
I would make it clear that every threat would be taken seriously.

9. It only reinforces my belief that people suck.
I swear, I hate the human species. Hopefully an asteroid will crash into the Earth and destroy us all.

10. He was asking for "help" at one of the most attrocious sites around

And, contrary to popular reports, users were capturing stills from his video and sending them to his friends and family on MySpace, to attempt to get people to help him that actually knew him. I think this is being boiled down too much. Yes, those people are assholes, but this wasn't the first time he claimed he was going to do this (happened almost once a month) and some of those joking may of had no clue it was real.

BTW, something that is sad is that some people at that community are still making jokes about that today.

13. Would you believe?
It is a terrible tragedy. Not sure if I would believe; however, that there is a kid dying... You see a lot of stuff on the Net, hard to find out what is real. Apparently he tried before. Also, I saw somewhere that the first caller to Miami police was somebody from India.

14. This reminds me of the "Kitty G. Effect"
Where people just stood there while a woman was murdered because they "didn't want to get involved".
