Florida is officially nuts: 13-year-old arrested for farting
Student arrested for passing gas

STUART, Fla.—A student at a Florida school has been arrested after authorities said he was "passing gas" and turning off his classmates' computers. According to a report released Friday by the Martin County Sheriff's Office, the 13-year-old boy "continually disrupted his classroom environment" by intentionally breaking wind. He then shut off some computers other students were using.

The Spectrum Junior-Senior High School was arrested Nov. 4.

A school resource officer placed the boy under arrest after he confessed about his behavior, according to the report. He was charged with disruption of school function and released to his mother.

What's next? Armpit noises are a Class 2 felony?

I know where the WMDs are, and they're in my dog's intestinal tract.

Seriously, it peels the paint.:puke:

38. My dog is offended by human farts. He always gives the offender a LOOK,
then excuses himself to a distant corner of the room.

So it's a two way street!

28. I guess an invitation to dinner will have to be
at an outdoor picnic. Last night we had homegrown organic cowpeas from the garden for supper. We were watching TV later on the couch and the obvious effect set it. I let'r rip and the racket was sufficient that my husbear jumped up for the paper towels because he thought one of the dogs had barfed.

"Uh, no hon, just no open flames for a few minutes, k? Or we'll go sky-high." :nuke:

Bears know how to eat.

Glad I left Florida. They'd've put me in a nookyoular lockdown facility.

but farting? Sheesh.

8. I think you need to make a distinction between "dicking with computers"
and simply shutting them off. If he was damaging them in some way, ok, but it sounds like he was just being a typical 13-year-old jerk.

In my day, the nuns would have made us wish we had never heard of farting. But, call the police? Never. A night in jail would have been preferable to what the nuns had in store for you.

14. If the other students were working, it would cause problems for them
(which is what it sounds like)so an in-school punishment would fit. But being arrested? no way!

24. Like the problem I created for Frankie McGillicuddy
when I decked him in sixth grade for repeatedly hitting me in the ass with his ruler while I was at the blackboard. He and his desk fell over and so did the guy next to him. That caused some problems.

The nun took me out in the hall, took her blackboard pointer and whacked a large roll of paper about five times (for effect, I guess). She then told me, "I can't condone what you did, but I'm very glad you did it." The nuns didn't need the police to exact justice.

31. Similar story here.
Except, it being a public school, the vice principal (not a nun) hit his desk with the paddle (instead of hitting my ass) and told me to fake the pain. The instigator got the real deal, AND the deviated septum I had provided earlier.

The postscript? We played golf together at the last High School class reunion (30th, if you must know).

Had people involved the effing pigs back then, I doubt we would have wound up as friends.

If he was destructive or dangerous, OK. But 13-year-old boys have been screwing around in school since the beginning of time. Sheesh! Arrest should be the last resort.

19. Wrong, yes. Wrong enough to be arrested? Hell no.
Call his parents, put him in detention, even a short suspension, sure. But we have GOT to stop relying on the police to intervene in situations like this. This is not a matter for law enforcement in any meaningful way; all it does is teach kids that if you step out of line even slightly, the fucking law will have your ass. It increases cop-fear, and that is the LAST thing we want to do if we wish to foster independent thinking and a willingness to commit civil disobedience in defense of what it RIGHT.

We don't need an entire generation of children who grow up terrified of, and easily intimidated-by, police officers. Americans are too easily cowed as it is.

35. my post was the bullshit headline kid arrested for farts. i hate misrepresentation for agenda
so much of what you say i agree with

the arrest, said in done, not a big deal for age and how they handled it. maybe the kid will be afraid and not behave like this

i am more bothered with tasering so willingly ect...

i am more bothered that parents arent parenting their kids and they behave this way. i have an 8th grade boy and could not even see him doing a little of this.

i often argue your point. not a cop thing. call parents to school and deal.

again, i was commenting on bullshit interpretation

13. I suspect that he wasn't "arrested" in the normal sense.
I also think that messing with the computers was the more serious problem and the author of the article was sensationalizing it by emphasizing the farting.

The article says that he was arrested by a "school resource officer" (whatever that is) and released to his mother. This sounds more like a school disciplinary action rather than something he's going to be facing charges for. Although it seems odd that the Sheriff's office would be releasing a report on it.

17. The story said he was "charged"
That means criminal charges were filed -- that's pretty much "arrest" in the normal sense.

27. I missed the word charged. You're probably correct
Edited on Tue Nov-25-08 11:58 AM by drm604
Still, it sounds like the problem was general disruption of class rather than farting specifically. Messing with the computers is probably the more serious issue.

29. All Florida schools have School Resource Officers now
The definition of a School Resource Officer encompasses three major components of his/her job- that of law enforcement, counseling and education, which is a pro-active approach to law enforcement through positive role modeling. These three components allow the SRO to promote positive relations between youth and law enforcement which encourages school safety and deters juvenile delinquency.

26. Was he arrested for farting, or for disrupting?
Unless the disruption is dangerous, I wouldn't arrest him for it. Remove him. Suspend him. Not arrest him.

Unless, of course, the gas was actually deadly, lol.

If he was having digestive difficulties, he could have gotten a pass to the bathroom or the nurse. Unless, of course, the point of the farting WAS to disrupt.

Does excessive gas trigger turning off others' computers?

Sounds like the adult in charge should have had him out of there earlier.

Still, arresting him is ridiculous.

One of my first boyfriends, a little younger than that, was famous for belching. He'd take a long drink of water, and belch the abc's, or a top 10 song, or a whole conversation.

We were all highly entertained. Of course, his belches didn't have the same aromatherapy value as farts. He was never arrested.

33. SROs are extortion.
The local police department forces schools to hire SROs, paying up to 100% of their salary to the PD from school instructional funds.

If schools refuse, the police tell the community the school is not safe, because they have no SRO.

The PD gets to pad it's own budget at the expense of the school. And the school has little control over how the SRO does his/her job.

36. It happened on Nov. 4th.
Was the class following the election? Was he disrupting because he did or did not like how things were looking?

Arrested is a bit harsh (what ever happened with being sent to the principle's office?) but was there a potentially volatile situation - more volatile than the gas he was passing?
