PET FOOD RECALL--Summary of Important Information
Edited on Tue Mar-20-07 04:48 AM by piesRsquare
I recently started a blog, and I just did an extensive post on the pet food recall.

My blog is called "2 Black Cats": http://2blackcats.wordpress.com/

The post includes:

-Relevant links to the FDA, Menu Foods, American Veterinary Medical Association, and others

-Symptoms to watch for

-A list of blogs with good coverage of the recall, including one with a database/registry for you to report if your pet is sick or died from contaminated food, and

-A compliation of the most relevant of our wonderful DU in-house veterinarian kestrel91316's posts on the issue.

I will add updates as I come across new information.

It's difficult to find the most important information when so many articles, comments, messages, etc are posted all over the place. I hope the summary on my blog is helpful. Feel free to send the link to anyone and everyone who needs the info.

Fortunately, my two black cats are fine. As an animal lover, a veterinary technician, and a Human Being with a heart, my thoughts and prayers go out to all cat and dog owners...

1. Thank You so much, piesRsqure. I have been trying
to gather info for fellow pet owners. Now I can send this to them. I've especially been researching natural pet foods ect.No more grab bag food for my cat. Although my cat's food was not recalled, I am switching to a much better diet for her. I did not realize how much horrible stuff is in so much pet food.

2. One of my cats had been eating wet food at night...
He was getting Fancy Feast. Nestle-Purina (who makes Fancy Feast) contracts with Menu Foods, and even though Fancy Feast isn't on the recall list, this whole ordeal has scared the crap outta me, so I threw out the last five cans I had. No more wet food!

3. I had been feeding my cat and my dog some wet food once a
day, mostly as a treat. As a precaution, I have suspended their wet food, even though it is not listed, because the list seems to be getting longer. There may be more foods listed before they have gotten to the bottom of this.

Thanks for getting all this info in one place for us.

5. why is "Your Pet" DOG food on the list but not "Your Pet" CAT food?
Harris Teeter sells under "Your Pet" and I have an assortment of cans of that for my cat which I just bought last week. Is there an error in the list? I am going to take it back to the store today but thought I would mention this disparity in case other cat owners didn't happen to read the dog food list....

17. Other Foods Not Involved In the Recall (Non-Menu Foods)
Natural Balance
Natural Ultramix
Organix
Nature's Recipe
Eatables
Halo Spot's Stew
AvoDerm

(My cats like Organix, but think Spot's Stew is too weird and vegetably)

8. My cat switches to Whiskas tonite.
PetSmart near me had their shelves full of cans of Whiskas, no doubt for the people who will be switching. I don't have the affected type of Special Kitty, but I'm not going to take any chances with the Menu Foods brand as a whole now.

13. Natural Balance and Castor & Pollux (Organix) are also on the "safe" list -
I feed both of these brands to my cat and checked each of their websites today, and they confirmed that they're not part of the recall.

15. Even More Products May Have Taint: FDA
Federal officials in the midst of a national tainted-pet-food scare yesterday acknowledged that all of the poisoned goods may not have been identified yet - and that some may remain on store shelves.

16. From Trader Joe's Website - About Their House Labeled Cat and Dog Food
1. A Message To Our Customers About Trader Joe's Pet Food
According to the FDA, Trader Joe’s pet food products are NOT the same pet foods that are currently being recalled by Menu Foods. However, since safety is of the utmost importance to us, as an extra precaution we have voluntarily pulled all canned pet food items manufactured by Menu Foods from our shelves until we can test the products and be 100 percent sure they are safe for your pets. The products voluntarily pulled are: Dog Food Chunky Beef 22 oz., Dog Food Chunky Chicken 22 oz., Dog Food Lamb & Rice 22 oz., Cat Food Turkey & Giblets, Cat Food Premium Fish/Salmon/Rice and Cat Food Premium Chicken/Turkey/Rice.

21. Kicking
I put notices up on the community mailboxes yesterday about this. I had printed 20. They're all gone now.

We watched the local evening news tonight and NOTHING about this food recall. You'd think they'd at least do an update in case people don't get to watch them a few nights! This is a developing story with more brands being added all the time!!

WHERE IS THE MEDIA ON THIS? PEOPLE DON'T KNOW ABOUT THE PET FOOD RECALL!!

A mycotoxin is a toxin produced by a fungus (such as mold).

If mycotoxins are present in the wheat gluten, it means there was a fungal infection on the wheat.
