The powerful humanity of liberal talk radio
A young woman called into the Malloy show on Nova-M tonight. She and her husband lived 2-1/2 hours north of Madison, WI and had both lost their jobs, then their home. They left their 8 year-old and 13 year-old with grandparents while they travelled to Madison looking for work. They were currently living in their car, but the husband starts a new job Friday and the wife has interviews lined up for next week.

Within minutes a trucker phoned in and said if the couple was still listening, he'd meet them at a truck stop, fill up their gas tank and give them enough cash to return to Madison so they could be with their families for Thanksgiving. Another caller offered to put them up, feed them and give them cash to make the trip both ways.

By God, THAT'S the America I know and love.

2. Yes, I heard that.
I am back to being a Malloy fan. His description of what he felt on the evening of November 4, resonated with me. Most of his stuff does.

3. That's beautiful!
That's such a sad story, but also a very uplifting one in that there are people out there who really do care and want to help. Those people know tonight that they are not alone in their struggle.

6. Nice story. But how many others will never get on the radio and no one will hear their story.
It is getting worse for everyone by the day.

12. that made me cry
and i didn't expect it. i've had some hard times. years ago i was with my kids at a taco bell and all i could scrape up was enough for a couple tacos each. my little one was only 3 or 4 at the time and a man at the counter asked me if he could buy him the kids' meal. i still remember sitting down and crying at his kindness. when life can be so hard and mean you find your hope running out and wonder if it's even possible let alone worthwhile to go on one more day, it is only the love and kindness of people that can pull you through and remind you that tomorrow is another day. i just love people who love people. thank you for sharing. i hope that family has the thanksgiving of their lives.

13. I'm still homeless, living in my car. Tomorrow is a holiday, and everything is closed.
I'll be thankful if I can just find a restroom, and way to be in out of the cold for a short time.

19. This is what it will take - one by one by one by one
The assoc. producer of the Malloy show has the couples' cell phone number and is suggesting people in the Madison area call into the show to see if they can help them out further. Apparently, they made it to their destination with the trucker's help. Then the trucker called in from his hometown of Crystal Falls, MI talking about how the town is dying and businesses are shutting down. He has a real handle on the economy.

Unfortunately, John had to leave the conversation - his prepaid minutes were running out.
