Great American Holidays That I Have Never Seen Anyone Shit On At DU
Los Dias de Los Muertos, the first two days in November in which families gather together in Mexico to remember the dead. Much like Thanksgiving in the United States or Christmas. Scenes like the one below, in which families set up picnics in cemeteries with flowers and incense are common, as are altars with food offerings, candy skulls, marigolds.

Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birthday I can not say that I have ever heard anyone at DU (whom I did not suspect of being an agitator) complain about this holiday.

Carnival in Rio What's not to like about a festival that allows everyone to dress up like a Vegas showgirl?

Mardis Gras Best of all, you can celebrate it and then skip lent.

Groundhog Day Who could object to this furry critter (besides vegetable gardeners?)

Halloween My favorite holiday.

In the spirit of bipartisanship, it is only fair that we allow equal time to bash these (usually) unbashed holidays, so flame away !

2. Boycott Halloween!
Do you know how many sugarcanes gave their lives so that we can indulge in such wanton debauchery? Besides, who wants to legitimize extortion.

3. Mr. d. picked Groundhog Day as our anniversary so he could remember it.
Later, much later, I started wondering if he had a Bill Murray joke in mind.
Hmmmm....

5. Here are some more
Icelandic Independence day

Talk Like A Pirate day

Prohibition Repeal day

Frank Zappa's birthday

These are not (yet) American holidays, but they all should be.

Icelandic Independence Day deserves the same spirit of celebration as Saint Patrick's Day and Cinco de Mayo

7. Zappa was a little weird,
I saw him in concert once and he asked all the women to throw their panties on stage. Many of them complied with his request.

6. If anyone craps on Syttende Mai, I'll be pissed.
That's a real holiday - mired in a history of conflict, oppression and, ultimately, freedom.
