32. Thanks! Found a link - it was Hagel and Kit Bond
LINK

Under the bill (S. 214), which passed 94–2 with only Sens. Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.) and Kit Bond (R-Mo.) opposed, the attorney general can still name an interim U.S. attorney for up to 120 days. However, after that time the president must sent a permanent nominee to the Senate for confirmation. If that does not happen, a district court would then have the authority to appoint an interim U.S. attorney.

with that kind of support, a veto could be overridden.

10. Bush can veto anything
Edited on Tue Mar-20-07 11:43 AM by Atman
But this one got damned near unanimous support. Bush's veto would be overturned easily.

It's the signing statements that are more troubling. He can NOT veto it, and just say "I'm going to ignore this" in his s.s.

11. Well, that's a veto-proof majority
On the question of signing statements, Shrubco are chickenshits. Cheney is not going to write a signing statement for Bush to sign, unless he knows people are not paying attention

14. With that vote, the Senate could override any veto.
(As long as the House passes the bill with a similarly large majority of the votes)
If enough Members object to the presidential veto, a vote is taken to override, or overrule the veto.
A two-thirds vote or greater is needed in both the House and the Senate to override the President's veto. If two-thirds of both houses of Congress vote successfully to override the veto, the bill becomes a law.
If the House and Senate do not override the veto, the bill "dies" and does not become a law.

I have to admit, I wonder if it is it too late - can we ever truly restore them?
