Kentucky anti-terror law requires God be acknowledged
Under state law, God is Kentucky's first line of defense against terrorism.

The 2006 law organizing the state Office of Homeland Security lists its initial duty as "stressing the dependence on Almighty God as being vital to the security of the Commonwealth."

Specifically, Homeland Security is ordered to publicize God's benevolent protection in its reports, and it must post a plaque at the entrance to the state Emergency Operations Center with an 88-word statement that begins, "The safety and security of the Commonwealth cannot be achieved apart from reliance upon Almighty God."

State Rep. Tom Riner, a Southern Baptist minister, tucked the God provision into Homeland Security legislation as a floor amendment that lawmakers overwhelmingly approved two years ago.

As amended, Homeland Security's religious duties now come before all else, including its distribution of millions of dollars in federal grants and its analysis of possible threats.

The time and energy spent crediting God are appropriate, said Riner, D-Louisville, in an interview this week.

"This is recognition that government alone cannot guarantee the perfect safety of the people of Kentucky," Riner said. "Government itself, apart from God, cannot close the security gap. The job is too big for government."

5. I Wish That the Fundies Would Mind Their Own Business!
Jesus Christ! There, I acknowledged their Almighty.

It is getting very tired, the fundies and their constant attempts to shove this crap down our throats. The faster the people of Kentucky toss these wackos out of office, the better. Yeah, yeah, not gonna happen....but hey, I can dream!:)

9. God. Yeah, right.
You might be willing to trust a dude who creates floods, tsunamis, volcanoes, tornadoes and hurricanes to protect you from terrorists, but I'm not so sure.

On the other hand, we might want to pay this guy protection money before we all get turned into pillars of salt.

10. Lemme guess what justifications will come...
They are not "REAL" Christians or they wouldn't force people?

Acknowledging "The Almighty" is not an establishment of religion, just a general phrase about something bigger than all of us which could apply to anybody of any faith or none?

Does it hurt you or eliminate your rights to disagree just because of words on a plaque or report?

Or will the resident amateur apologetics fans finally admit that it's de facto OK in this country to force theocracy on the rest of us as long as it is CHRISTIAN theocracy (not of ocurse that real Christains would do this, right?)

15. The question was rhetorical--I have friends in Kentucky
Edited on Mon Dec-01-08 06:23 PM by leftofthedial
but doesn't it seem (politically at least) that Kentucky keeps doing these head-scratching WTF things?

BTW, "infested" doesn't mean that every soul there is one, just that there are lots of them.

What do you think living there? Are predatory proselytizers rampant? Or is it a small minority giving Kentucky a bad name?

Even though I don't think y'all're stoopid, I'd be glad to share some "book larnin" with you! ;-) But I'm skeered of lectricity.

I did think you were talking about all of the state, esp. when taking the subject into consideration along with the "that place" comment. Anywho...

a lot of Kentucky is pretty conservative. The metro areas are pretty strongly liberal, and for that I'm thankful. I'm a law student at a pretty big university in a pretty big town, but even here there are plenty of people who think Barack is secretly a muslim terrorist with designs on the Apocalypse.

As for this little tidbit of news - my reaction was WTF - and I have lived here for essentially all my life.

18. "If God is your co-pilot, how come you never let him land the plane?"
(seen on a bumper sticker)

If they rely on God so fervently, has he/she let them know directly about any pending plots?

Somehow I doubt it.
