Power Corrupts / Reid: "We won't smell the tourists any more"

The Capitol Visitors Center, which opened this morning, may have tripled its original budget and fallen years behind schedule, but Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid found a silver lining for members of Congress: tourists won't offend them with their B.O. anymore.

"My staff tells me not to say this, but I'm going to say it anyway," said Reid in his remarks. "In the summer because of the heat and high humidity, you could literally smell the tourists coming into the Capitol. It may be descriptive but it's true."

But it's no longer going to be true, noted Reid, thanks to the air conditioned, indoor space.

And that's not all. "We have many bathrooms here, as you can see," Reid continued. "Souvenirs are available."

$621 million well spent.

..and burns, the head of our senate has nothing better to do than overspend and otherwise play a part in mis-management? No wonder the world is burning being this is the mentality at the head of the world's largest, richest government.

It really makes me want to scream. What an ass. Until now, I could have cared little about Reid (except I muse over the fact that he walks upright; no small feat, being almost infinitely spineless), but this quote takes the cake. What an asshat.

Truth be told, I used to dread having to cover appropriations hearings because they were held on the west side of the Capitol in a packed room with sunlight burning in, and yes, we all stank.

The problem is not a damned one of us was a tourist.

As soon as Daschle left, and Reid took over Senate majority, the first thing I noticed is that they talk almost exactly alike, in that breathless tone that just drives me effin' nuts.

I don't care what party he's in - and it kills me that he's making us look so bad by saying something so gd stupid! We the people, the taxpayers, you know, his BOSSES, are not the great unwashed, even the republicans. damn.

....unfortunately, the tourists visiting the Capitol will still smell the Congress, a block away....

He is fine as a member of the Senate among other members, but he should not be leading the Democrats.
