Texas Gov. Rick Perry is not in favor of a promised effort by the Democratic-led Congress to aid states facing budget troubles — but Perry is not going to reject that federal money if it does flow to his state, a spokeswoman said.
Perry, who joined governors Tuesday in a closed-door meeting with President-elect Barack Obama in Philadelphia, believes a discussed two-year, $500 billion plan is bad public policy, his spokeswoman Allison Castle said.
Perry took similar positions on the rescue plans for Wall Street firms and automobile manufacturers.
The National Governors Association has said the possible state aid package under discussion in Washington should include money for infrastructure such as highways, public transit, wastewater and water systems, school construction and airports. The association also urges an increase in what the federal government contributes toward each state's Medicaid costs.
Castle said Perry thinks "they should not pass this bill in the first place. If they do decide to do it, he's not going to refuse money. In fact, if they're going to be handing out Texans' taxpayer dollars to states all across the country, you can bet we're going to fight for our fair share."
