1. You betcha! As ironic as Caribou Barbie's turkey pardon in front of "a fowl slaughter."

3. Back in Nixon's day
The media had just gotten the idea that there was something adversary to their relationship with power. Several years of being lied to hadn't sat well with some folks like Walter Cronkite and Jack Anderson, and culminating with Nixon (who lied almost reflexively, a relatively new phenomenon in those days), there was well-earned skepticism evinced fairly often to asinine pronouncements.

Nowadays, of course, there's enough money for everyone in the press room, and the promise of high-powered cocktail parties and glittering soirees is sufficient to keep the media bulldogs fat and happy. So when George W. Bush dodges them for months on end, they just take another drinkipoo off the bar cart and wonder why those bloggers are so mean and nasty. The attitude toward them in the Oval Office hasn't changed - the president still thinks they're dumb bastards - but they don't care anymore.

4. That was one of the kinder things he said. The new tape releases are amazing.
What sucks, though, is what this really represents to us. Nixon's tapes have been out there for years. They've been releasing them in dribbles, the "nicest" ones first. The ones that show Nixon was simply paranoid. Now, years later, we finally hear the tapes that prove he was not only paranoid, but a totally self-centered, self-serving crazy man.

It will be the same with Bush. Half of us will be dead by the time the true Bush story comes out. If you think Nixon was a crazy nut paranoid, wait until Bush's "tapes" come out.

Oh, wait...Cheney learned a lot working with the Nixon admin. First and foremost...record nothing. Transcript nothing. Lie about everything. If there's no record of it, it didn't happen.

5. I am not so sure I could agree
with Nixon about the media at the time he said that. As I remember it, for the most part the media had journalistic skills, integrity and believed in accuracy and fact checking, not the kind of things Nixon liked. If someone would say that about today's media with a few exceptions I could whole heartedly agree they are "Dumb Bastards"
