Apple removes antivirus support page
Interesting. The page was found and made it into the MSM. Now it turns out it was "old and inaccurate."

Mac is still the most secure platform.

_________________________

"We have removed the KnowledgeBase article because it was old and inaccurate," Apple spokesman Bill Evans, told Macworld. "The Mac is designed with built-in technologies that provide protection against malicious software and security threats right out of the box.”

The Web page seemed to go against Apple’s newest ad campaigns that suggested only the PC needs antivirus software. Even though the page has been removed, Apple did not tell customers to absolutely not protect themselves.

1. Just because Apple is in denial, doesn't mean the users have to be in denial too.
No OS is secure "right out of the box", yet Apple spokesmen claim otherwise. Why? What's the point? Do they want their users to have a false sense of security?

2. OH NOES! It's the end of Apple! I'm getting rid of my Mac and installing Linux!
Or Ubuntu...or...or...Vista! (Actually, I don't have to get rid of my Mac...I can install any of them if I want to. I don't).

3. Macs need anti-virus.
Just like everything needs it. OS X is not invulnerable.

4. You running a Mac?
Are you running anti-virus software?

What problems have you had with viruses on the Mac?

5. I have two
A G5 tower and a powerbook. Yes, there is anti-virus software that came with the .mac account. No known problems with viruses, though I've had problems with OS X that could have been caused by a virus.

There's a short list of mac viruses here:

http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=89199

Macs are not invulnerable. OS X is patched constantly by Apple. Why? Because there are problems that could be exploited. Besides that, there's no reason to concentrate on creating viruses for the mac when it's going to only affect 5% of computer users. The PC market is a far larger battle ground.

6. I've been running Macs since 1985
And I've never had anti-virus software installed.

And I've never had a problem with viruses.

From what I've seen and read, the only way for a virus to affect a Mac is if you give it root access. Since you have to explicitly do this, it greatly reduces the ability of a virus to affect it.

Have you ever had to deal with a virus?

I'm curious, because when I hear about viruses and the Mac, I never hear someone say "I got a virus and it did such-and-such to my Mac." I hear a lot fear over viruses, but I don't hear about any damage.

Have you "lucked out" like me?

7. I've been running Macs since 1988 and have never had any problem despite extensive internet use
I've never used any anti-virus software, but Software Update runs automatically on a weekly basis.

That list of Mac viruses was from pre-OSX.

10. Wow! Cool time machine!
Here in the 21st century, that is no longer true.

Where are you posting from? 1996? 1993? 1988?

Here's a few antiques for you to throw out:

"Macs are twice as expensive as PCs"

"They don't make software for Macs"

"Apple is going out of business"

13. I agree. Bought a Mac this year after hearing all these great things
and the impression I get from it is it's designed for people who don't really like using computers. I like to tinker and Macs are not made for tinkering. Nothing wrong with it, it's just too simple for me. I will say that I have made great use of Garage Band though.

9. I fully expect a certain tombstoned troll to try to reregister for the 2,347,856th time
in order to once again impart us with his wisdom about the "Apple cult." No, wait, it was the "Cult of Apple." My bad.

And if that person is reading this, kindly go sodomize yourself with a pineapple. Sideways.

11. Macs don't get viruses because no one has ever bothered to write a virus for macs.
