I just got polled for 'research' from the Wall St Journal and one other company.

He said he was going to give me some "pre-screening" questions,

so that I could see or hear how the polling questions would go.

I said that's fine. Ask away.

Then he just asked some basic questions, starting with...

Are you registered to vote?

Are you registered to vote in your county?

How old are you?

Do you come from an Hispanic non-English speaking background?

When I answered that question as no, he said

"Thank you for your time" and that was the end of the poll.

Weird.

Man, when I get those "poll" calls, as soon as they ask for personal information, I hang up.

Remember - you have no idea who's on the other end, and would you give a perfect stranger that kind of information if you and he were standing on a street corner?

He didn't say my name when he called. I've been polled many times
during the primaries and during the campaign after wards by Gallup
and a couple of others. I don't think I fit the demographic they were
attempting to target. I'm not worried about it.

He had your phone number, and, yes, asking you your age, if you're registered to vote, what your ethnic makeup is - in my world, those are personal questions.

People fail to understand how easily they're tracked.

If he wants to "track" me; as in like trying to steal my identity or my money?

How can you prove who he was?

Did you ask him where he got your phone number?

If you're young and trusting and inexperienced enough to believe that someone "didn't sound like a kook," I applaud the protected world in which you've dwelled.

Try *69 and you might find out that that "number is unavailable." That feature doesn't always work. Or didn't you know that?

Now, I'm a professional, advanced degrees and all that, for more than thirty years. Can you tell that by how I write?

I'm guessing I'm older than you or about your age and I'm well aware about the pitfalls of giving out "personal" information, WHICH I DIDN'T DO, but if you actually go through life, as scared and frightened as you sound like you do, then I think you may have some issue's. Me? I've been through hell and back and that call didn't alarm me at all. I'm pretty good at knowing the difference and have had "alarming" calls from crooks and I took care of them fast but, IMHO, this guy was legit and harmless.

In the meantime, I'll wager your assumptions - and how you come to them is probably a mystical process as yet unknown to the rational world - will keep you comfortable. I don't think your trip "through hell and back" (poor baby) did you much good. I mean, a post because you got a strange phone call? I'm as goofy as you are for responding, but, you know, we psychotics just tend to pick up on the less gifted members of our culture and then we enjoy playing with them - mouse, catnip, you know the rest. And you keep coming back for more, which I think is testimony to something. I'm sure you know what I mean because you've "been through hell and back". Plus, you know how to answer the phone.
