60 or Not, Dems Have Edge They Need
Source: Real Clear Politics

Tuesday's Senate runoff victory in Georgia gave Republicans a small bright spot after their devastating electoral setbacks.

But there is probably more bravado than reality in Sen. Saxby Chambliss' claim that his triumph will ensure a "balance of government" when President-elect Barack Obama take office.

I would, quite frankly, be astonished to see any successful filibuster in the next 4 years.

1. I agree. There will be a few moderate Republicans who would vote with the
Dems.

2. Screw that - go nuclear and get healthcare done ASAP
I can't see how it'll possibly pass short of going nuclear.

3. Get the Employee Free Choice Act through ASAP as well.

Congress has historically been too gutless to pass anything that challenged Taft-Hartley. America's workers need a clear early victory on that issue. EFCA isn't Taft-Hartley repeal(which still needs to happen)but it's a start. It's also likely to be one of the first big filibuster issues. I think GOP'ers like Collins and Snowe could probably be brought around to break a filibuster.

8. Some Republicans will be scared about re-election.
They'll become Democrat-lite just like the Democrats were doing Republican-lite.

You don't want to vote against popular programs when you're up for re-election.

11. The Majority controls the agenda, even the title of introduced legislation
Let's see the Republicans try to filibuster:

"Resolution in Support of Motherhood, Apple Pie, and Raise the Minimum Wage"

"Resolution to defend America on American Soil" (Troop withdrawal)

"Resolution to Protect Puppies, Kittens, and ban Assault Weapons"

12. I tend to discount this article's reasoning for one reason.
"moderates like Maine's Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, Ohio's George Voinovich, Minnesota's Norm Coleman"

Umm? If he's so wrong about Coleman, his entire premise might be at risk.
