Sad news. Civil Rights pioneer Odetta has passed on.
On December 3, 2008, the Folk/Blues/Civil Rights legend, Odetta passed away from heart failure. She had been hospitalized earlier for kidney failure. She had hoped to perform at Barack Obama's Inaugaration.
This is sad news indeed. I had the privilege of meeting this giant of the American arts and civil rights community a in 2004. What a great and humble lady she was. She will be missed and I hope the other artists and distinguished guests at least mention her at the inaugaration. RIP Odetta.

1. This might be her last performance
KoKo01 posted it last night when the sad news came out.

As sick as she was, she didn't leave a dry eye in the place.

There ain't a dry eye in my house that's for sure. Thanks for posting the link and also, I apologize for posting this sad news when it has already been made known here. I've been away from DU for a couple of days and have just had an opportunity to post tonight.

3. I met her years ago at the Toronto Folk Festival
This was in the 1970s. I was a volunteer and as such got invited to the after-parties at the sleazy motel where the performers were housed (the Executive Motor Lodge on King Street). There was a small sing-along in the stairwell, Stan Rogers and Odetta and just a few civilians, all of us rather drunk by that time. As it wound down I remember Odetta crying on Stan's shoulder and him comforting her. We were all so exhilarated that it was was sobering and unnerving to watch someone at the living center of all that we admired so much just sobbing her heart out. So there's no immunity, I was thinking.
