Bush: Bible 'probably not' literally true
Edited on Tue Dec-09-08 08:32 AM by alyce douglas
do you hear heads exploding from the righteous right?

US President George W. Bush said in an interview Monday that the Bible is "probably not" literally true and that a belief that God created the world is compatible with the theory of evolution.

"I think you can have both," Bush, who leaves office January 20, told ABC television, adding "You're getting me way out of my lane here. I'm just a simple president."

simple is correct!

6. That's because he was a knowingly blind puppet all this time
Edited on Tue Dec-09-08 08:41 AM by shadowknows69
We all knew he wasn't the real power behind the thrown. He's proving it now with this sad attempt to craft some kind of definition for himself.

2. Well you little fundies out there in fundie land,
this is the president you were all slobbering over for 8 damn years and the traitorous nitwit you stood in line in the rain for hours to vote for over Al Gore and John Kerry.

Enjoy the glow of his legacy!

7. Agree. Some of them surely suspected they were being sold down the
river back in 2000.

By now they ought to be sure of it.

22. Also, Proving To Them That They Were Used
Loads of us have been saying this here for years, i know. But, this is just another confirmation that they never cared about the radical religious right. They just used them for politics.

the "exit only" lane, that is. And, I hope that lane leads over a damned cliff.

8. Hait to rain on the parade here but....
...he's right.

I'm definitely more pessimistic than most on the real nature of majoritarian Christianity in the US but even I acknowledge hardcore biblical inerrancy is held only by a minority. And that pinko subversive Pope Ratzinger agrees you can have evolution and divine creation combined (as do many others).

So he's not saying anything stupid here - for once. And while he certainly spoke (spake?) and still speaks in fundy code, I don't think he has ever flat out said he is a biblical inerrantist with the 6000 yr old six day as-is creation that it dictates.

9. Bush is right, but what is so striking to me is that he
Edited on Tue Dec-09-08 08:56 AM by Old Crusoe
knows that fundamentalists who supported him in overwhelming numbers don't want to hear what he just said.

He's leaving office and won't ever need their votes again, so he lets rip with this "revelation" about Biblical literalism.

10. Bush never gave a crap about the fundies
Even now, republicans are pro life mostly out of convenience, rather than actually out of any genuine beliefs.

For all the talk of the religious right taking over America, they didn't get 1/10 of the things done that they wanted to.

I find this very amusing.

11. True, they have not been able to cross much off their list,
despite handing Dim Son almost a decade in the White House.

It must be incredibly frustrating to be Dobson or Perkins right now. The more vocal they are in the GOP ranks, but less electable GOP candidates become.

Which is good for our side.

12. The Terri Schiavo situation was the pinnacle of the religious right in America
That was when everyone realized how crazy they all where.

14. Yes. There was Bill Frist offering a video diagnosis from afar.
There was the fundamental right screeching like farm animals in the streets of Pinellas County.

And Jeb Bush threatening to send in the National Guard TO KEEP OUR ANGEL TERRI ALIVE.

It was a macabre circus.

16. I like to think Terri got her revenge (in death) on the people who exploited her while she was alive
Edited on Tue Dec-09-08 09:21 AM by galaxy21
Bill Frist and many other had their careers ruined over it. But, yeah, I've read several theories that that whole thing was basically the end of the religious right. Basically, the only thing more important to Americans than religion is the privacy of family. I think the republicans didn't realize how many people it would piss off.

I think people that called Bush a fundy had entirely the wrong idea about him. He used them, but he wasn't one.

18. They looked like stark raving mad idiots, wholly agree.
That plus the footage of people on rooftops in New Orleans after Katrina.

Kind of a 1-2 punch, all Dubya-era events.

"We'll invoke God himself to preserve Terri but abandon the folks in New Orleans without a thought."

20. I think democrats had the point of view of 'let's stand back and watch them destroy themselves'
I think Dems could have done more to stop the situation (even Barack said he regretted not doing more) but maybe they just figured it was better to keep out of it.
