not good---illinois may have a special election for the senate seat
Durbin and the power brokers in illinois may impeach blago monday and call for a special election. this would open up the seat to a republican two years earlier than the 2010. given the political climate in illinois there`s a 50-50 chance the senate seat could go to a republican.

dick kay on 820am chicago was discussing the latest news on the governor. the only way to get around a special election is for blago to appoint someone tomorrow. if he did it should be jessie jackson jr according to kay.

2. If Blago appoints them, they'll lose in 2010 for sure.
That's a sure path to defeat. His name is going to be worse poison than Ryan's.

5. They just need to change the rules to say that the legislature
appoints replacements.. Legislatures used to appoint senators anyway..

6. 50:50 I'll take it
Just to keep the fucking choice out of that allegedly greedy dirtbags hands, anybody he picks is tainted in a big way and will be quickly shunned and quite possibly defeated at the first opportunity.

I'd say our chances are a lot more like 75:25 as people in Illinois don't seem to mind the stench of corruption any more than the voters of Connecticut. A well financed Democratic candidate with a new Illinois POTUS behind him/her will have a pretty easy time.
At least a bit easier than the time I hope the allegedly greedy dirtbag will do.

10. dick kay has great coverage today on this....
the senate could but probably would`t. the republicans would love to have a shot a the senate and this is their best chance in years.

in my opinion blago should appoint jessie jackson jr and get it over with.

11. You elect a corrupt governor, this is what you get.
People knew what he was before the last GE, and elected him anyway. Now we're screwed. To everyone who voted for this POS, a hearty "Thank you!".

12. I voted for him in the GE in 2006. Here's why:

His primary opponent didn't have a chance-- no money and little name recognition outside of Chicago. Plus he was an alderman so he's immediately suspect. So on to the General Election.

Vs Blago in the GE you've got Topinka the repub, who can win, and some Green who can't.

At this point I'm assuming two things: One is that there's a real good chance for either of our rising star senators to have some role in the next white house and that means we need a Dem gov to appoint the successor. The second is that Blago seemed even in 2006 to be real close to indictment. So I figured Vote for Blago in 2006, good guy Pat Quinn takes over probably in 6 months, Quinn appoints Dem replacements, and Quinn has 3 1/2 years to build his own brand.

The timing didn't work out so well but I honestly don't think we're screwed.

13. Umm, they're the party that nominated Keyes in '04, and managed to lose to Blago twice!
I don't think that winning a special election will be a problem in Illinois.
