Obama's Seat could now fall to the Republicans
phucking great! :banghead:

Madigan Speaker of the House (IL) just announced that he is now open to holding a special session to CHANGE ILLINOIS LAW to allow for a special election to fill Obama's Senate Seat.

THANKS PISSANT - Now you've opened up Obama's seat to a possible REPUBLICAN win in a special election

Goddamnit!

1. Durbin and Reid both think a special election is a good idea.
Maybe transparency in government is a good thing; doesn't mean a rethug will win.

2. And the alternative is... what, exactly?
Blagojevich has already said he will not resign. If this drags out into impeachment, it could take months. Nor would the Senate seat anyone Blagojevich appoints (they have the right to reject a Senator).

If Blago does go soon and the Lt. Gov steps in, then hopefully we can just quickly appoint a senator and be done with it. But if that doesn't happen, then a special election may be the best way to go.

Besides, the IL GOP is in shambles. All the top statewide officials are Dems with clean hands -- Lisa Madigan, Nick Gianioulias, etc.

16. Green would never have won - therefore not an option

8. At this point, I really don't care
although I highly doubt that a Republican will actually replace Obama

12. Stop making something out of nothing. Even Dick Durbin suggested this earlier today
And it's a smart move.

Illinois is solidly blue and could easily keep this seat blue. But if Blago appointed someone and this got out we could end up losing this in 2010

13. And yet, we were stuck with Republican governors for 24 years before Blago

I hope the demographics have shifted enough that we can win the election.

But...bad as it is that Obama's seat might go to a republican...I think it's the only way that person will even have a chance at a fair shake in the senate.

15. A gubernatorial appointment brought Alaska 40 years
of Ted Stevens, not to mention the lovely Lisa Murkowski. Special elections are best.
