ASIA MARKETS

Asian auto shares plunge, dragging region lower

Honda, Toyota plunge 10% or more in Tokyo; yen soars as crude drops

By V. Phani Kumar, MarketWatch

Last update: 6:18 a.m. EST Dec. 12, 2008Comments: 68HONG KONG (MarketWatch) -- A week of solid gains ended on a sour note for Asian markets Friday as stocks got broadly hammered as hopes for a U.S. government bailout of the Big Three automakers collapsed.

Regional automakers -- such as Toyota Motor Corp., Honda Motor Co. and Hyundai Motor Co., all of which depend heavily on the U.S. market -- plunged in afternoon trading.

Meanwhile, the dollar fell against the Japanese yen in Tokyo trading, hitting a 13-year low of 88.02 yen, before rebounding after news broke on Capitol Hill that the Senate had failed to reach a compromise on the proposed auto-loan package, which had cleared the House of Representatives Wednesday night. 4. Southern Republicans are a special breed, that's for sure
Collectively, they manage to take the "cut off nose to spite face" deal to ever higher levels.

15. You're right. They embody all of what is wrong with America now.
We're being dragged down by conservative "ideas" and the fear-mongering of the Screeching Hannitys.

from day one. They were the Tories and were never for this country, except what they could rape from it. And most of the "bad chapters" of our history were them getting their way.

Maybe they don't think they're hated enough yet. If they get their way about this, and the public watches the economy go over the cliff from it, even their remaining few supporters (the ultra-slow) will catch on.

16. It is amazing how wrong right-wingers have been over the years.
On everything. As you say, they were the Tories, who didn't even want America to exist. Then they were the Confederacy, who wanted to rip the country apart. They fought against civil rights with all their hearts in the 60s. Today they remain anti-worker, anti-citizen, and at root deeply anti-American. Hearing Piggy Lipstick talk about finding the "real America" in various right-wing hellholes is either enraging or comical, I'm not sure which.

Here's a great (but long) article on the perennial, continuous, constant overwhelming wrongness of conservatives:

8. The Senate Republicans must have sided with Hitler during WW2
Since their siding with the Germans and Japanese against America now.

Maybe they're Nazi agents!!!!!!

The Politics and Economics of the Auto Bailout

Background: There's a new Civil War going on when it comes to automaking in America. Japanese, Korean, and German automakers are now building 18 auto assembly plants in the United States, none of which is unionized. Kentucky (Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell) already has Toyota's biggest auto assembly plant outside Japan. Tennessee (Senate Rep. Bob Corker, who came up with the "chapter 11" bailout amendment) houses Nissan's North American headquarters. Alabama (Senate Rep. Richard Shelby) hosts Mercedez Benz and several other foreign automakers.

17. The truth about the South
basically in the history of this country there have been 2 great movements that helped the entire country. first one was the industrial revolution. this was centered in the NE and Midwest. NE had the money and the Midwest had the means of production.

What was the south's contribution to that.

Information age- primarily a silicon valley west coast thing with sub centers in Massachusetts.

What is the southern contribution the that movement.

They move companies to the south because it is cheap- same as a 3rd world country. What did manufacturing move to Mexico- cheap

why are textiles in Bangladesh- cheap.

The south has always been more dedicated to their region than America,
"American by birth, Southern by the grace of God" No other region separates itself form the county like that

23. I wish you wouldn't use the term "Japanese crap."
The problem for Detroit has been just the opposite. The Japanese cars are so well made you rarely have to spend time and money on repairs. After a new Ford pickup that hadn't had all its nuts tightened and almost lost its bed on the highway and a new Pontiac that had to be jump started within 10 minutes of leaving the lot, I starting buying Toyotas. If the American carmakers want to win back consumers, they need to make a good product at a reasonable price. I like some of their cars now and might buy one, but I can't afford them.

25. A few weeks ago, in a thread about China, someone posted "Chinese only make cheap junk."
I pointed out that China has an aerospace industry and there's plenty of evidence that they produce a lot of quality stuff. The real problem is that Americans only buy the Chinese "junk", then some complain that that is all that Chinese are capable of producing. And there is the historical analogy that after WWII Japan exported mainly cheap goods to the US. Once their economy was rebuilt they have shifted to focusing on more high-quality, expensive exports.

I rarely see posts referring to German "junk" or Swedish "crap". Are Mercedes, Volkswagen, Saab, and Volvo much better vehicles than Toyota, Honda, and Subaru?

As regards whether I am on DU or Free Republic,
I think Orwell said it best.
From Animal Farm;

“The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.”

32. Republicans want American union autoworkers paid the same as non-union autoworkers. AND
more importantly he wants the workers at suppliers to be paid the same as those in Japan that in many cases are not paid overtime, are not paid for all work they perform, work more than 10 hours each day, have little break time. Basically sweatshop conditions and in many cases under human trafficking.
