Ex-Detroit Tiger Jim Bunning votes against auto bailout. He's scheduled
to be in Taylor to sign autographs. I hope he gets run out of town.

BRIAN DICKERSON
Ex-Tiger Jim Bunning a shoo-in for chutzpah hall of fame
BY BRIAN DICKERSON • FREE PRESS COLUMNIST • December 12, 2008
He may be losing his marbles, but U.S. senator and ex-Tiger pitching great Jim Bunning still has big brass cojones.

After all, most of the GOP senators conspiring to kill a House rescue package for Detroit's auto companies wouldn't have the guts to set foot in Michigan this week, much less hawk their autographs to beleaguered Michiganders at $55 a pop.

But Hall of Famer Bunning -- a vocal opponent of the auto loans -- will do both of those things Sunday when he journeys to the deepest heart of UAW country.

He'll sign baseballs ($35), posters ($45) and jerseys or gloves ($55) from noon to 2 p.m. at the Gibraltar Trade Center in Taylor, then head over to Solidarity House to knock back a few cold ones with UAW President Ron Gettelfinger.

I'm kidding about the Gettelfinger part, of course; Bunning more likely will be wheels-up before the sun sets on Metro Airport. I just hope he has the good sense to make the round-trip to Taylor in a Detroit-manufactured vehicle -- even if it does cheese off Toyota, whose largest American plant is in Bunning's home state of Kentucky.

7. Considering that the entire show might have been boycotted, he certainly did the right thing.
The Gibraltar Trade Center is in Michigan.

2. Ky. Sen. Bunning, ex-Tiger, snubbed for autos vote (tossed from card show)

Jim Bunning was the toast of Detroit when he threw a no-hitter for the Tigers in 1958.

Now, after opposing a federal bailout for the auto industry, the Republican senator from Kentucky can't even get a gig signing autographs at a suburban sports-card show.

Bunning was to appear Sunday at the Gibraltar Trade Center in Taylor. Fans would have paid $35 for Bunning to sign a baseball and $55 to sign a bat.

But Bunning was kicked off the schedule after he helped derail an auto-industry loan package in the Senate Thursday night.

Owner Jim Koester says he can't support someone who voted against Michigan's economic well-being.

6. I truly thought you were going to say that he is scheduled for
electro-shock therapy tomorrow or something like that. People talk about the lack of experience among those on the list to replace Hillary Clinton. Jim Bunning was actually suffering from presenile dementia when he was elected the last time.
