Ray LaHood by the numbers (it ain't pretty)
ADA: 25% (repuke average: 16%)
NARAL: 0% ("Mr. Blutarsky. Zero point zero.")

Thanks for nothing (literally), Barack!

1. But he won't have anything to do with those matters from now on
On the other hand, I've seen some conflicting reports around here about his stance on public transportation, which obviously he will have an impact on. I'd like to learn more about that when I get done with schoolwork.

6. Well, not with abortion rights
but ADA (Americans for Democratic Action) covers a wide range of issues.

Besides, he's in the Cabinet. Cabinet members generally have the President's ear, unless their name is "Powell" and the pResident is a petulant little weasel named "Bush**".

What the hell does abortion have to do with transportation?

If you want to slam LaHood, do so on his transit record, not ratings dealing with something he will have zero influence over.

10. It has to do with what kind of repuke Obama is reaching out to
hardly a moderate, as I had forlornly hoped, but a real, live right-wing anti-choicer.

I only put NARAL in there because I can't recall offhand who else besides them and ADA publishes Congressional ratings.

11. Then why put it at all?
You and I both know LaHood will have no influence on Obama's abortion stance.

12. It's one measure of just how far right he is
to use a transportation analogy, off the side of the road, on the shoulder.

13. Find something about transporation and use that.
Edited on Wed Dec-17-08 09:33 PM by Drunken Irishman
Abortion is not a transportation issue.

It doesn't matter if he's conservative on that issue, there are many Democrats who are, but other than, fairly liberal. If you feel his stances on transportation issues are a bit too conservative, then by all means, attack there. But to me, abortion just doesn't seem like something to harp on.

19. Okay. Let's turn this around.
Suppose Bush** (or more likely, the *elected* Bush) had appointed an out-front liberal/progressive Dem, perhaps a CBC member, rather than Norm Mineta (the unsung hero of 9/11, by the way), to this same post.

For starters, Bill-O and Insannity alone would have emitted enough hot air to triple the rate of global climate change. Speaking of which, how green is LaHood? Would he support alternative fuels (other than corn ethanol, pretty much a given for an Illinois rep)?

24. That's them.
I'm not going to freak out every time Obama appoints someone who is more conservative than I am.

The reason Bush failed was because he stacked his cabinet with far-right ideologues.

23. Excellent resource.
Mahalo (thank you), hay (and nickinSTL, below). I was blissfully unaware of that until now. :dunce:

Doesn't really tell us much, since there haven't been very many close votes on transportation issues for a while, save for the auto industry loan (please don't call it a "bailout"). It does tell us that LaHood isn't really among the die-hard Groucho Marxist ("Whatever it is, I'm against it!") wing of the repuke party, for which I am grateful (though I'd still have preferred a true moderate).

I was withholding judgment on that until I knew more.

I don't blame anyone for being touchy. We all need to stay vigilant on choice.

OUR dude actually WINS an election and is gathering all these people that he supposedly does NOT have to "reach out to".

I know I'll be corrected.
