What other excellent programs for helping people and the planet abroad or here at home rate high on your list?

5. I make yearly contributions to Heifer International. I also give monthly to Doctors Without Borders.

Oxfam, microfinance loans through several different organizations, UNICEF, and those that purchase netting (Nothing but Nets) are all worthwhile.

8. Sometimes called microcredit. It is very small loans, sometimes from $50 to $500, to the world's

poorest people. They may use it to say, buy a goat or sheep to produce wool which they spin and knit into something sellable. The one I give to, FINCA, "offers loans to low-income micro entrepreneurs who are members of village banking groups. Such members not only receive loans, they also form cohesive groups who manage and collect repayments on those loans, save diligently and decide on ways to invest their savings, and make progress together, forming networks for mutual support."
