Cheney: Bush will be popular in 30 years.»

In an interview with the Washington Times yesterday, Vice President Dick Cheney asserted that Bush’s “place in history likely would grow during the next 20 to 30 years.” Arguing his case, Cheney cited President Ford’s decision — unpopular at the time — to pardon President Nixon:

“By the time of {Ford’s} passing a couple of years ago, opinion had totally turned on that,” Mr. Cheney said. “In fact, most people by then, even many who had been very critical 30 years before, were in agreement that in fact it was a good decision, it was the right thing to do from the standpoint of the country.

“I’m personally persuaded that this president and this administration will look very good 20 or 30 years down the road in light of what we’ve been able to accomplish.”

Of course, Cheney was also “personally persuaded” that violence in Iraq was in its “last throes,” that there was “no doubt” that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction, and that Republicans were going to win election contests in 2006 and 2008.

2. 20 or 30 years is too soon. Everyone living today will have to be
dead for them to white wash Bush. It has taken that long for Hoover.

3. This is the same message Tucker was pushing on Morning Joe this morning.
Tucker envisions democratic transformation of th e Middle East to which * will eventually be credited as starting. The revisionist history meme of late is sickening.

7. There does seem to be a contingent of people
who applaud this administration's high crimes. I find it frightening.

But I do get the sense that some people admire lawlessness.

9. Let Me Ask You This: HAS THAT EVER HAPPENED BEFORE????
An administration that was ABONIMABLE during it's tenure, but 30 years later looked GOOD???

I think not. This is idiotic to the extreme.

12. Like Wilson-- yes, I'm sure he will be.
Edited on Thu Dec-18-08 10:28 AM by Marr
I doubt it'll be so soon as 30 years-- probably more like 50 or 60. He'll be "popular" in the sense that history books won't teach any of the pertinent facts about the last 8 years. He's never going to be judged a success, though. The jury is in on that. Over time, however, the ugly realities that have defined the character of his administration will not be common knowledge anymore, and the name GW Bush will be afforded the same vague, disinterested respect as a Hoover or Wilson in the mind of the average citizen.

16. Nixon is known for one crooked thing for the most part.
However, he is looking pretty good right now.

Bush is wall to wall crooked and was on watch for 9/11.

Let's just hope that the textbooks are not written by Karl Rove.

I bet Bush and Cheney is hoping that another Presidency will come along that is worse than their's.

Fat chance.

Oh, wait. President Palin.

27. In Iraq they'll have a George W. Bush day.
It will be celebrated sort of like Guy Fawkes day in England.

Children will build effigies of Bush and put them on the street for people passing by to step on and throw pretzels at. In the evening these effigies will be tied to a post for people to throw their old shoes at. The festival will end with a huge bonfire and fireworks.

Bush will be a popular Guy. In some nations his face will be best known as a popular brand of urinal inserts and other public restroom sanitary supplies.
