Busting up the middle class via the UAW
My Grandfather was part of the UAW formation. I grew up hearing the stories about making a stand and knowing how important the unions were to our concept of democracy. It's ironic that the Republicans seem to want to return to the Feudal Lord system, and yet they call themselves patriots. America was supposed to be the land of opportunity and equality for all. The Republicans have stood for a global NeoCon agenda for so long that I don't recognize them as the party my other grandfather was a member of. They used to stand for fiscal conservatism, but now while they cling to that like an aging film star holds on to a picture of herself from 30 years ago, they are unrecognizable from that policy.

Now, the GOP stands for taking rights away in the name of trickle down economics, taking rights away under the guise of Christianity, and taking rights away by divisive, southern strategy campaigning and outright lies and revisionism. They have to revise the past, because their actions can not withstand scrutiny. They stand for nothing except greed and abuse of power. They manipulated their uneducated "base" with hate rallies, all the while despising the very people they were whipping into murderous frenzies. As soon as they get into office, those people are forgotten. Their promises of "pro-life" agendas and their talk of socialism becomes a joke as they hob-nob with the French and beg for an appointment as French Ambassador. They never tell their constituents, though. Wouldn't want to have to walk their talk.

Union busting is simply a form of reinstating the very systems our government was designed to prevent. It is also the GOP's way of making sure the Dems aren't funded in future elections.

It's extremely unpatriotic to want to bust the unions in this country. They are an American institution and without them, we would not have a middle class. SHAME on the Republicans for this blatant attempt to use a national crisis to further their party's agenda. SHAME. They should not be able to call themselves patriots anymore.

1. K & R!
It is shameful! This is exactly what they are attempting to do. They want a country with poor and rich only...no middle class. I can't put into words how horrible it is to see the manufacturing base of this country be systematically shut down. So many people are hurting and they are doing nothing to fix the problems. All the blame for everything from housing to manufacturing is being put at the feet of the workers...the middle class.

2. I know
It's truly heart-breaking to see what has become of many hard-working Americans as their jobs were out-sourced and their unions defeated inch by inch.

I'm watching with deep regret and mourning as the Republicans still try to man-handle the unions re this issue. Bush wants concessions from the union in order to have an "organized" bankruptcy?

We couldn't let the banks fail. Or any of the other robbers -- no, they have friends in high places with stock options.

But the auto companies -- they are the step-child and the unions the scapegoat.

My grandfather worked for this cause all of his life. He's going to be 90 in January and his heart is broken.
