A sign of the state of the economy...
I am a former teacher working on my second masters degree yet I spent this 2 hours this morning waiting in line with about 200+ other people to spend 5 minutes interviewing with a young woman who could have been one of my former students for a job, any job, at the brand new PetCo opening in town.

The worst part was walking out past the rest of the people waiting in line to be greeted by 3 students I taught last year waiting in line to apply for the same job and knowing that they are more likely to get the jobs because they DON'T have any higher education.

2. I know where you are coming from. It sure is a humbling lesson, and in some cases
a very bitter pill.
I have been unemployed since July. I was a system-programmer for decades, for some of the best corps in the country...but that was then and this is now. I would also take anything that was offered.

My sister has 2 masters degrees and is also unemployed.

We both send out resumes, and do not even get any sort of acknowledgment. The resumes might as well have been lost in limbo. There is no way to know if it was ever received.

It is a difficult time.

4. Exactly where I am!
I've sent out nearly 30 resumes and applications in the last couple months and I have received 1 or 2 replies. I don't know if they have been accepted, processed, trashed, etc. The businesses that are hiring have their pick of potential employees so if you don't match their EXACT qualifications, it is the circular file for you.

The master's I'm working on now is in computer security and I'm hoping that will get my foot in the door of the tech field...I just couldn't take teaching anymore with the destruction of the education system by the current government.

That just makes me sadder than anything else - but I have the unfortunate feeling that you are right.

7. I don't know if this will help anyone,
but the field I'm in is always hiring and we can't find enough people. It's mission-critical solutions and if you're going to school anyway, why not go to school to learn something marketable? We need facilities people - knowledge of air conditioning, UPS (uninterrupted power sources), generators, electrical. There are some community colleges that teach courses for this trade. People earn $60k - $70k per year. All of our people are now becoming certified in "green" data centers as well.
