Tony Perkins (hideous fundie tool) says the following
about Warren's spot at the inaugural:

Let’s hope that Rick Warren will use his channel of communication to the new President to press him for more pro-family policies rather than simply being used by Mr. Obama to make political inroads with evangelicals.

do you get it NOW?

do you see that these bigots have NO PLANS to "come under the big tent"?

do you see that they just want to continue to force their dominionist woman-hating gay-hating agenda down our throats?

what will it take for you to see the light?

We should ban them from holding jobs.
Make sure they can't marry or keep kids.
And mark them with colors so we know who they are.

Sounds familiar, eh?

31. I expect Warren will give a white bread invocation,
Edited on Thu Dec-18-08 04:33 PM by MineralMan
something like this:

Dear Lord:

We just ask you today to look down and bless our nation as a new leader takes the helm. We pray that he will be ruled by Your will and lead the nation on a righteous path. As we face difficult times, may he guide our path down a good road.

We know, O Lord, that your watchful eye is on the United States of America, and ask You to not take your hand from this nation.

In Jesus name, we pray,

Amen

I do not think there will be any mention of abortion, gays, or anything else. It's just not done, and Warren is enough of a make-nice preacher when he needs to be to give just that kind of prayer.

Note this and see if I'm not correct.

Warren is not just a "silly invoker." If that were the case, why not just pick some guy off the street? He was chosen for a reason -- a very important reason. There are hundreds of thousands of preachers in the US. Warren was chosen to send a message. If you choose not to understand the message, then more the pity for you.

32. Mr. Perkins is not Mr. Warren
What he says does not necessarily reflect what will be said during the invocation. Nor does what will be said during the invocation necessarily reflect on what policies the Obama Administration will pursue. Trust a church-goer, no one remembers what was said in the invocation, and unless the benediction is particularly noteworthy (Having one of the founding fathers of the Civil Rights movement give it suggests it might be) precious few will remember it either. What will be remembered is the Inaugural address, which Mr. Warren is neither writing nor giving.

35. Of course. This invitation is a signal to the fundies that the issues near and dear
to their hearts (no marriage for those dreadful queers, no easing up on barriers to choice that have been thrown up) will be maintained under This Christian Presidency. It's a great big leap rightward.

They don't get it. They'll never get it. There's too much cognitive dissonance happening. How can anyone who fist bumps POSSIBLY be a bigot?

You'll hear every excuse from "He doesn't mean it, really" to "It's all part of his secret plan to bamboozle the fundies" and "They FORCED him to do it--he was er...MANIPULATED....by the Dee El CEE!!!! Blame THEM!!!! Yeah, that's the ticket!!!"

Don't blame Obama, though, really--the words that indicated he was OPPOSED TO GAY MARRIAGE came out of his mouth a LONG TIME AGO. During the PRIMARY. He might insist now that he's fervently for equal rights for all, but you can't be "fervently" for equal rights for all if you oppose a key federal benefit for a segment of our population--you just can't.

But let's be fair. He never made a secret of it. He said what he said. He's not changing his awful position--he's just solidifying it.

Some people, eager, nay, ANXIOUS to see in Obama the liberal ideals that they craved, IGNORED what he said. Others listened to his pals, who nudged and winked on his behalf. Blame the people who "interpreted" for him and said to you "Pssst...he doesn't mean it--he's just SAYIN' that, to get elected, see?" They lied to you.

And Rick Warren, with his words of hate wrapped up in a big smile and a bit of folksy scripture, is the proof of that. Meet the New Billy Graham--I'll bet Mister Saddleback will spend a lot of time at the White House, basking in the Glory and warming up his flock to vote for a second term....Quid Pro Quo, after all.

There will be more disappointments to come, I suspect.

56. The 'other side' meaning Dobson, Perkins, et al,
DON"T WANT to talk. The mainstream Christians, Gays, non-Christians, all have been told not to make waves because then the Religious Reich will become more and more stubborn.

I've seen them at work for more than 30 years, and I have some news for you. They refuse to allow any compromise. At all. They are determined to see a theocratic government (Bush tried)where they control the countries 'morals'.

This may sound cynical, but it is just a fact of life. They will not stop until abortion is illegal including cases of rape and incest, all porn is banned (including Playboy and its clones), most music is gone, and the list goes on and on.

The only hope we have is to make them as ineffective as possible politically. I'm sure Obama is hoping for some sort of compromise with them, being Christian himself, but their past record indicates it will never happen.

66. Perkins doesn't get Obama
The problem with Warren isn't that Obama is going to give any serious consideration to his arguments as having any merit. The problem is that Obama is playing a political game of trying to defuse the antipathy of the RW Christofascists by a symbolic gesture that is deeply offensive to so many who worked hard for him.

Perkins and anyone else in his camp is dreaming if they really think they can bend his ear and change his mind about anything except the political cost of advancing a human rights agenda. Warren can talk hate (under the code phrase "family values") until the Rapture and it won't make a difference to Obama's thinking. It's strictly theater.
