Poll question: The Official "If-not-Rick-Warren-then-who?" Poll!
Edited on Thu Dec-18-08 06:08 PM by ColbertWatcher
Inspired by the suggestions in this thread, please choose an alternative that you find acceptable to having Rick Warren deliver the invocation at Obama's inaugural:

A. I'm fine with Rick Warren delivering the invocation at Obama's inaugural

B. since he's already going, let Reverend Joseph Lowery do it instead

C. Jim Wallis, Tony Campolo, Bishop Gene Robinson or Rabbi Michael Lerner

D. Rev. Barry Lynn - head of Americans United for the Separation of Church & State

E. The Dalai Lama, Desmond Tutu or Jimmy Carter

F. Lewis Black, Wanda Sykes or Dr. Stephen T. Colbert, D.F.A.

G. DUer Husb2Sparkly

H. a religious leader unknown outside his or her own community, but whose tireless work for the poor, the hungry and the homeless is well-known inside it

I. Dr. Thomas Robb

J. cancel the invocation--no more prayers at state functions (Change begins with following the Constitution)

8. which question?
1) why not somebody even worse than warren? Hagee and Phelps, for example. I think Warren is too milque-toast about putting them gays in the ovens. Obama should put up an outright fascist theocrat unashamed to recommend genocide.

2) the poll format (see the other ten thousand polls on DU right now) allows the text of the choices to be included in the selection box instead of separate.

10. Oh! Number 2.
I have figured that out, but it looks too cluttered to me when the language of the "choice" is too long.

7. Why should those of us who believe in God be punished for the sins of Rick Warren?
The majority of Americans, (and an awful lot of us Progressives) , believe in God and Jesus and should not be singled out for the sins of others. I disagree with J. Prayers are spoken words, not physical acts of violence.

11. Wow. I don't know where you got that from the text of that selection.
Separating church and state has nothing to do with whether it's spoken or not.

20. "cancel the invocation--no more prayers at state functions "
The MAJORITY participating in this poll agree with the last selection. And I when it comes to DU, it seems attacks on Faith come in a variety of ways. Eliminating prayer from a function, State sanctioned or not, is just another way of suppressing religion. I'm the LAST PERSON to have posted in the Prayer Circle Group (non-denominational) here on Nov 29th. So that tells me that DU as a whole is not a place where like-minded people of FAITH gather. Not invoking prayer in schools, fine. I understand the necessity of NOT influencing those whose parents may not agree with invoking religion in the teaching of education, or teaching a preference in religion. Take the words "In God we trust" off of the money. OK, fine, than who do we trust, the US Government? Why not allow many prayers at State functions, Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu, why not be ALL inclusive instead of exclusive?

My Faith is strong, and in spite of my feelings about the Reich wing, the anti-labor movement here and around the Country, and the attacks on the gay community from within the 'religious' community, don't substitute the sacrificing of one right because of the exclusion of another.

That's where that came from. Hope I didn't upset you, nothing personal.

22. "Upset?" No. Confused, yes.
You have a lot of words in your post, but I haven't discovered a response to the Constitutionally recognized separation between church and state.

If you believe in God or Jesus (or whatever) then you can support the Constitutionally recognized separation between church and state. It protects your right, while simultaneously protecting the government from becoming a theocracy.

The "J" selection does not place Warren above another religious speaker; it follows the Constitution closer than any of the other choices because it recognizes the separation between church and state. Selection "J" states that no prayers should be conducted during a state function. That does not prevent you from engaging in prayer at your home, your church, in a closet, on the street, from your rooftop (etc.) at any time before, during or after the invocation, the inaugural or at any time during Obama's term in office.

Also, if you do not want to pick selection "J," you are welcome to choose one of the following:
Choice A, Choice B, Choice C, Choice D, Choice E, Choice F, Choice G, Choice H or Choice I.

Edited on Thu Dec-18-08 08:26 PM by KamaAina
I had already thought of Wallis, but wasn't sure if he was a minster or lay leader.

Robinson would make lots of FReepers' tiny little heads explode like fireworks! Whee!! Ditto Lerner, but probably different FReepers (y'know, the ones who are always saying that they really don't hate Joooooos that much :eyes: )

edit: smilie
