...that people like Rick Warren and his followers will not be swayed from their absolutist positions. Furthermore, they will certainly not be swayed by pandering to them. Why should they change their position when holding to it allows them to have more influence?
Warren and his ilk believe they have the word of God on their side. Their views are fixed, and crystallized around a certain reading of their scriptures that allows them to be comfortable in their homophobia. Never mind those bits about adultery and divorce -- society has moved beyond that, and somehow the Warrens of the world have come to terms with that. But dammit, don't ask them to give up their homophobia, because that is a deadly sin!!! And the fact that it's not in the Ten Commandments (while adultery is) -- well stop pointing out those inconvenient truths! Moses left one out! It was supposed to be Eleven Deadly Sins!
This is a person who lies about the basis of his beliefs on marriage. He claims that marriage is, and always has been -- for 5,000 years, in *every society* and *every religion* (his words) -- "1 man and 1 woman". Now this is patently false -- the Bible has stories of marriages that were 1 man and several women, and of course there have been many religions and societies that were set up differently from marriage always being 1 man and 1 woman. So he is a liar and a fraud from the gate.
I don't doubt your sincerity in what you say. I just think it is misguided. Sure, there are lots of folks in this country who still think being gay is a choice, and that taking away the rights of gay people is okay because of that. But this is no time to bend over for those people. Why, I must ask, are we always told that pandering to these sorts is some kind of useful action? Why start out right away by compromising with evil bastards? Not to put too fine a point on it...
