CarolineK voted in only half the elections held in NY since she registered to vote there...
I still kind of support her, but this looks bad.

She voted in very few Democratic primaries:

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/2008/12/18/2008-12-18_records_show_caroline_kennedy_failed_to_.html

City Board of Elections records show Kennedy has failed to vote in many elections since she registered in the city in 1988 - including votes for the Senate seat she hopes to fill and numerous Democratic faceoffs for mayor.

"It doesn't speak to a deep-felt commitment to the electoral process," Baruch College political scientist Doug Muzzio said when told of Kennedy's ballot breakdowns.

Records show Kennedy did not pull the lever for any of her fellow Democrats in city primary races for mayor in 1989, 1993 and 1997 and 2005, which Republicans went on to win three out of four times in the general election.

She was also AWOL for the primary and general elections in 1994, when Sen. Daniel Moynihan was running for reelection to the seat Kennedy hopes to hold.

2. She better learn to vote if she wants to be a Senator. I lose respect
for anyone who doesn't vote. Shame on you, Caroline.

Excuses for not voting don't mean much to me.

8. he addressed that, and considering his vocation, it makes sense
He is trying to be able to play devil's advocate, and voting either way would take that particular tool away from him.

If you're jonesing for a Senate seat, it makes NO sense to expect it to be given if you FAIL to vote in not one but SEVERAL key elections. Unless of course you are an american Dynasty member, and all it will cost you is a political endorsement of the winning candidate. :eyes:

9. Makes sense that they don't, kinda. Military officers used to never vote.
Gen. Marshall voted for the first time in 1952.

5. I think she lacks "passion." I think many of us here on DU could be
described as "addicted" to a certain extent..LOL, certainly we have passion on a wide range of topics. I'm as interested in races in other states as I am in my own local and state (Florida). This is not the news I would have liked to hear.

It's almost as if her thinking is "the kids are grown, I need something to fill my time." I could be wrong but I also think a US citizen who doesn't take voting seriously, from the B of E right on up the line is not a candidate for the political life..

7. That is not what we should want from elected officials.
Obama and Clinton (this is her seat afterall) have that passion.
Ms. Kennedy does not.

11. I think the degree of passion in Obama and Clinton gave - to me - a real joy in the primary season..
Gore didn't have it.
Kerry didn't have it.
Obama has it.
Clinton has it.

Obama and Clinton NEVER would have let Flordia 2000 happen. They would have fought. People would have fought FOR them. And, if it looked like they were going to lose, they'd ah cheated the way the Republicans did.

12. I was thinking the same exact thing
"the kids are grown, I need something to fill my time."

We don't need another trustfund baby looking for something to kill time, and use the office to go to all the *right* parties with a shiny new moniker. :eyes:

It's fairly typical that women with kids get involved later.

17. I'm not "ripping" on her. Pointing out a flaw, and not voting is a flaw
for someone seeking such a high office. She's a great young woman and I'm sure she has a bright future doing something important. But this non-ripping flaw will not go down well with people who take voting seriously..

20. I've actually been supporting her here, but this gives me 'pause', as they say...
In fact, after voting absentee or ahead of time, this go 'round I voted on election day to have the full, collective experience of voting. It was great.

Does anyone in NYC know if celebs get special privileges on this? I know celebs don't have to stand in line at the DMV in California.

Could it be she was just avoiding crowds?

23. Tim Robbins had a helluva time trying to vote in NYC. Imus often
talks about the fun he has when voting, the officials know him and he looks forward to the standing in line like everyone else and meeting his neighbors. If you want to void crowds, you take the trouble to obtain an Absentee and go from there. I love her, she's a wonderful person and was like you, quite happy with the prospect of her running for this seat, but not voting is a no no if you think you're going to run for any Office. I'll bet you anything Uncle Ted did not know she had not voted. It's almost like missing Mass for the Kennedys..Really.

25. Yeah, I'm going that way too, now. I made a LOT of effort to vote absentee - you'll LOVE this story
I voted, absentee, in a local Va. Beach election that included school board. I felt compelled to vote in these because of the strong influence of Pat Robertson's crowd.

You can imagine how thrilled I was when I read in the NYTimes that ALL his candidates had lost for the school board! I cheered out loud in the periodicals reading room in the UToronto library.

24. I have supported her appointment but this is not good IMHO.
It does not fit with my idea of her being a conscientious citizen. How difficult is it to vote, anyway?

It is just bizarre. I cannot fathom what she was thinking/doing to NOT vote in every election!

29. Can you think of reasons that would lead her not to vote so much?
I don't want to think she is "too patrician" to vote with the common people. But really, she could get an absentee ballot in the mail if she's travelling. It's no big deal.

I was in Europe for two election days, 06 and 08, and I really missed the feeling of going to the polls with everyone and just experiencing good old American election day! Altho it was kind of cool in Italy, watching CNN and scarfing up the International Herald Tribune wherever I could (out of luck on that outside of the bigger cities).
