"I needed to find a person who would do the painting that would be a good and forgiving friend," Bush said of Anderson. "It actually looks like me, which is a good sign. You did a fabulous job."

Why is it, when I look at THIS picture, I think of another one?

Someone at Freeperville proudly posted this one..

Artist: Robert Alexander Anderson ~ Darien, Connecticut.

Subject: President George W. Bush ~ The Yale Club, New York

This distinguished portrait was created at the invitation of the President, and was based on life sittings at the President's ranch in Crawford, Texas.

Given the extraordinary and auspicious subject, the artist's portrayal is remarkable for its naturalness and aura of friendly informality. This effect is achieved by the facial expression, the unaffected and down-to-earth pose, the simple domestic setting, and the presence of the pet.

We are all able to easily declare the likeness perfect, the facial expression being one familiar to all Americans.

*snip*

The expressive hands are masterfully drawn and rendered. J.H.S.

More of the technical artistic critique at the link above.

More about the artist and commission.

Note: I found this exquisite portrait a couple of days ago, and knew it just HAD to be the Photo of the Day.

and I immediately thought of THIS one...

6. Anderson made the expression softer and kinder than real life.
As if there's empathy and a grasp of reality in there somewhere.

The portrait's hands look like a photograph. That's real talent right there.

I'm wondering how long that's going to last before someone defaces it.

He deserves a punishment of repeated keelhauling in pigshit, not reverance or artwork.

33. Portrait title: "The Fiddler of Rome"
The painter was obviously a Bush friend.

He added in a faux glint of intelligence behind Bush's normally vapid stare.
