A bit of hope out of disastrous choices
I fully support equal rights for all. I think prop 8 is a truly hateful and despicable piece of legislation. I think those that support it should be boycotted, protested, exposed etc. I think the choice of Rick Warren for the invocation shows a remarkable lack of judgment. I'm not gay, it's just sometimes the right things and the wrong things are just so obvious that they can't be missed, swept under the rug, or ignored.

I've done a lot of reading both here and around the web the last few days and slowly come to the conclusion that proposition 8 passing, with all the subsequent scandals and blinders being removed from peoples eyes will probably do more to advance GLBT causes in a shorter period than it's defeat would have. It "should" be overturned by the courts thankfully, but the opinion polls show a dramatic shift in support towards GLBT equality in it's aftermath. It's caused a backlash moment. (see the rolling stone's article) It might be the "Rosa Parks" moment for true equal rights for this generation. A truly despicable act that totally backfires and causes the exact opposite effect. In the end, rights that might have taken another decade to reach folks may only take half that due to the after effects of proposition 8. Or at least the hopeful part of me hopes.

I can't say I see the same silver lining around Rick Warren. Maybe he's intended to be the same type of polarizing figure to cause the same type of effect. I know the PE is shrewd, but I think that's possibly too many points for subtlety even for him. Even if it is an attempt to bring things to a polarizing event, the duty and the responsibility to all of good conscience remains the same. Call and protest his selection. He's anti choice, anti gay... just anti fill in the blank. It may do no good to call and protest, or email and protest or however else you have to make your voice heard, but the responsibility for making your voice heard on important issues each and every time they rise up doesn't end on election day. THAT is what makes PE Obama special. He may not change it. He may have reasons we don't know about... but unlike that PoS that's in the white house now, he will have listened to the outcry. Each call matters.

1. Crazy to call and harass Obama
People should just relax. Prop 8 will be overturned, gays will get what they want and all will be right with the world. It's disappointing to come here and read so many shortsighted simpleminded posts which are trashing the President Elect. I trust his judgment and his political instincts.

2. "Gays will get what they want and all will be right with the world"
Spoken like a straight person who could genuinely give a shit. I can be fired from my job for being gay. I pay more taxes than straight married AND straight single people because I'm gay. And I face getting beaten to death by the Rick Warren supporters of the world.

You didn't elect a president, you worship a cult figure.

6. Straight?
What makes you assume I'm straight? I said 'gays will get what they want.' That doesn't mean I'm straight.

I think too many gays are paranoid and have martyr complexes.

10. You wanna explain *THAT* claim?
I pay more taxes than (...) straight single people because I'm gay.

Oh? Is there a check-box on that tax forms that tells the revenooers
that you're a gay legally-single person?

3. Yeah, we uppity gays should just shut up...
and be happy to be second class citizens. Just like those uppity negroes in the fifties. I mean, eventually they will be able to sit in the front of the bus - they just have to wait their turn, right? :eyes:

5. I was really surprised at the lack..
of comments on the change.gov community site. Perhaps some of the comments like here, were too caustic? In any case if anyone were in the least bit interested here is the link to the Change.gov Community site:

Here is a link to the Congressional Inaugural Committee members:

And here is a link to your representatives:

I know that Obama got blow-back on this, because he felt it necessary to respond. I would hope that those who are offended, and have not done so, might find it in themselves to compose an intelligent response and fire off a couple of emails. Or not.

7. Comparing gays to blacks is a false analogy
Comparing gays to blacks is a false analogy and many of them resent it.

Gay rights should be pursued and succeed on its own merits.

9. He'll do the invocation and then leave town, never to be heard
from in Washington again. No policy influence, bending no ears. . .

I won't be sorry to see him go.
