In other news, the state of California is on the verge of bankruptcy
California's budget mess got messier Thursday as Democratic legislators approved a package of tax increases and spending cuts, Republican legislators threatened to sue over the package's questionable constitutionality and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger made the issue moot by promising to veto it.

Democratic legislative leaders then announced lawmakers are going home for the holidays.

That announcement came at the end of a day filled with heated rhetoric, impromptu news conferences and a good deal of waiting around.

The plan, unveiled Wednesday and the third to be voted on by legislators since just before Thanksgiving, is designed to close a bit less than half of a yawning $40 billion deficit in the state's budget over the next 18 months.

Republican legislators blocked both earlier plans by refusing en masse to vote for anything that contained a tax increase. GOP votes were needed because tax hikes require a two-thirds majority in each house.

2. Wasn't Ahnuld going to terminate the deficit?
Ho, ho, ho, remember the good laugh we all shared about that? Gray Davis was just too much of a girly-man to deal with budget shortfalls the way a real he-man would. Well, now that it appears that the frilly underwear fits the current governor as well, can we expect Darrell "Crybaby" Issa to appear, demanding that Schwarzenegger resign? And all the major media outlets in California will give him the same worshipful coverage they did before?

3. Can a state actually file for bankruptcy?
I swear it seems more and more like the simpler solution is to let it all crash and rebuild. Less complicated, and hopefully enough of these blockading Repubs would take the more honorable "skyscraper window" approach and get the hell out of the way.

6. Sounds a lot like "Fiscal Malfeasance" to me
Isn't that what got the previous governor removed? In fact if I am not mistaken the budget shortfall at that time was only nine billion dollars... It must be great having such a great Republican to govern them..

8. Well, the state could have made some money on same-sex marriages
but the wingnuts took care of that windfall. I suggest someone start a constitutional amendment passing an increased tax burden onto those who voted for Proposition 8.

After all, if the gays pay taxes without being able to have all the same constitutional rights, the con-artist conservatives who engineered minority rights by majority vote can pay more taxes for the supremacy rights they campaigned for in the election.

9. Redding has two major bridges that link the east side with the west side.
Right now, both bridges are being replaced.

Yesterday there was an article in the paper that said that Redding might postpone completion of these projects until the budget is sorted out.

Yes, they will leave two half-built bridges and a NASTY mess indefinitely.

On the bright side, no more pile driving all night, every night. x(

11. Re: arnold ran on davis's poor job handling the states finances. what a joke.
Under Davis California had a surplus. The whole Davis recall was a scam engineered by the repukes and to the shame of Californians they fell for it hook line and sinker just because the sleazy Austrian was a movie star. Davis may have been as Grey as his first name but the man at least was solid, and California was in good health under him. Arnold and his Enron pals took California to the cleaners, but do you think most people know it? Governor Arnie ought to be in jail with the rest of the Enron gang.
