2. Weather at the holidays is always a big story
I think it's okay if there is a big storm since Boston is a major airport and Chicago is seeing very high wind chills which also can affect travel especially if there is blowing snow from the storm from a few days ago.

8. I was being sarcasmical
Although to the credit of society in general, I've heard much less of the "oh it's snowing today so Al Gore is a liar" kind of talk this winter than I did about two years ago.

4. Portland Oregon is in the midst of a 40 year storm ...
(40 years since the last storm of this magnitude) ...

I am looking at about 24 inches of snow in front of my house, with a 1/2 ice layer embedded within ...
We have been frozen for about 4 days ....

Seattle and Portland rarely get more than a dusting a few times a year, so while it is not unprecedented to get a winter storm here, about 90% of the vehicles here are not happy as snow-ice cars (I've been here over 3 years, and I have yet to buy chains - I didn't need them) ... There are hundreds of truckers and other cars waiting for Interstate 84 to open in the Gorge, and have been waiting for over 3 days now .... The airlines have canceled most flights out of PDX, with many of the stranded passengers sleeping on the terminal floor with their kids and animals ... AMTRAK suspended operations in and out of Portland (they are running now) .... Greyhound and other bus carriers did as well ...

The main news story here in Portland ? .... whatcha think ?

So, even though everyone knows we get 'cold and snowy' in the NW ... It is actually pretty rare to get these kind of extreme conditions here, and I am sure other 'winter' states and cities can also get a 50 year storm, and have extraordinary winter conditions that might even be worthy of a mention in the news ....

6. Well, I sat and worried all weekend over the weather in the upper midwest
because my niece was driving herself home to Milwaukee WI from IA (put her car into a drift in a blizzard but thank God a highway patrol was near and tow truck came and got her out - it was -25 windchill). And my BIL trekked up to Minneapolis to fetch my nephew with his stuff, and THAT was an epic journey from what my sister said. And then my sister worked Friday evening and Saturday evening and Sunday evening in Milwaukee, driving to and from work in blizzard conditions and -25 windchill.

Sometimes there are personal reasons for caring about weather in the winter. I am very glad all my family survived their adventures.

9. Summer and winter, it's always the same thing...
Winter in Massachusetts....local TV newsperson out on the street interviewing residents, most of whom seem to be completely surprised that it actually snows and gets cold here in the winter. They must forget during the summer...

Summer in Massachusetts...same deal. It can get pretty hot and humid here....people complain about how HOT it is. Again, they forgot during the winter when they were complaining about how cold it was.

But I really shake my head in amazement at the people up and down the Eastern Seaboard who live in hurricane-prone areas, and they build homes three feet from the water on the beaches and then get all like, "WTF happened, and why did it happen to US??" when a hurricane strikes and destroys their homes. Year after year. I dunno...must be me. You don't build your house in the middle of an elephant path and then complain when the elephants want to walk through your living room (See the movie "Elephant Walk").

10. It usually means there's stuff going on they'd rather not talk about.
(IMHO)
