80. It most certainly is!
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

82. Banning a prayer would be equal to prohibiting the free exercise.
Since it's a voluntary prayer and there is no law requiring it to be part of the ceremony nor requiring attendees to participate in it, it is completely Constitutional.

then there is no reason to have one, especially since it is against separation of church and state.

A prayer is not a religious institution hence it's not the Church. And you are right there is no State reason to have the prayer only an individuals desire to have one which makes it a personal free exercise of the individuals right.

He evidently wants a prayer. Forbidding him his prayer is unconstitutional. Requiring a prayer is likewise unconstitutional.

at the White House Toadies Dinner in 2006.

He needs to speak as honestly, in his intimitable style, to the entire nation, as he did to the White House Toadies.

My favorite line, a variant of which desperately needs to be said to the American Subject Populace at large:

"The press secretary announces those decisions, and you people of the press type those decisions down. Make, announce, type. Just put 'em through a spell check and go home. Get to know your family again. Make love to your wife. Write that novel you got kicking around in your head. You know, the one about the intrepid Washington reporter with the courage to stand up to the administration? You know, fiction! "

Yes, Colbert for the Invocation!

43. Prayer is not a "tradition of violating the Constitution"
Prayers have been part of the opening ceremonies of American governmental ceremonies since the time of the Founders. To call an invocational prayer unconstitutional, you'd have to call the authors of the Constitution unconstitutional, too.

In fact they would've had daily prayers at the Constitutional Convention itself if the convention hadn't run out of funds for hiring a preacher.

The Constitution is a living document, it evolves as we evolve.

Prayers should be banned from state functions because they are unconstitutional.

54. That's a good argument. Of course the slavery bits of the Constitution have been expunged
The only part of the Constitution dealing with religion (no establishment) has stood side by side with public prayers from 1791 to now without either impinging on the other. By standing tradition, prayers have been nonsectarian and thus not establishmentarian. People can pray in public together without favoring creation of a state church.

58. "without either impinging on the other" I disagree.
Religion is always impinging on the government.

"By standing tradition"
That's not good enough for me anymore, nor does it seem like it's good enough for people who want to shove their Christianity into American government.

"People can pray in public together without favoring creation of a state church."
People could do that, but people don't.

It's time we end the charade and cut all religious pronouncements from every state function.

I think you'll find support for this concern less than urgent. But then again, all new traditions in a culture begin as fringe concerns. Opposition to child labor once started off as a few Quaker crackpots in the 19th who'd run out of steam after their previous bugbear, slavery, had disappeared as a rallying cry. Today those crackpots are hailed as visionaries.

The time could be spent thinking about the bad that went down for eight years, and the hope we should all participate in so we can get the most out of the next eight years. Then maybe we could release a bunch of colored bubbles into the air.

Prayers (and all recognition of religion) during a state-sponsored event is unconstitutional as far as I'm concerned.

Maybe after dumping the prayer this time, Obama can reinstate in in 2012 with someone who isn't so disrespectful.

many of the musical selections are also cool (esp. 78. I like that! Drown out any BS with that chant.
Maybe - just possibly maybe - give Rick Warren a chance to rise above the level of crap he is used to dishing out to his sheep. But if he tries to shovel any bull shit to the country and world at large while being given a world wide audience, drown him out.

73. This poem
Democracy

Democracy will not come
Today, this year
Nor ever
Through compromise and fear.

I have as much right
As the other fellow has
To stand
On my two feet
And own the land.

I tire so of hearing people say,
Let things take their course.
Tomorrow is another day.
I do not need my freedom when I'm dead.
I cannot live on tomorrow's bread.

Freedom
Is a strong seed
Planted
In a great need.

I live here, too.
I want freedom
Just as you.

Langston Hughes

83. A medley of songs by The Byrds
Maybe some Carlos Santana.

Half an hour of Tito Puente.

Show tunes would be okay.

How about some Cab Calloway?

I know :snap: ...... The entire Janis Joplin songbook.

Tommy Tunes sings Liza.

94. I like your first option
Every four years, the nation could make a symbolic affirmation of our continued commitment to the Constitution. The inauguration would be an ideal time to affirm that no leader is above the law.
