4. Hi, norepubsin08.
It's rapidly disappearing from music lists but it is such a beautiful folk tune, and the spiritual aspect doesn't hammer anybody over the head.

It's just a very nice touch.

"Good King Wenceslas looked out
On the Feast of Stephen..."

Your son and I share a birthday.

5. Hey you poor guy
I work for a main line denomination so every Christmas I get seriously slammed. We always kidded our son that we would buy him a toy for Christmas and the batteries for his birthday.

What we really did was have a very small party on the 26th for him and one friend (My wife and I were always trashed on the 26th.) and then a big huge birthday party on his half birthday on June 26th.

Merry Christmas and HAPPY BIRTHDAY to you!!!-Mike C

14. absolutely!!
Although, Michael Crawford of Phantom of the Opera fame does a really powerful version also. The thing about O Holy Night - if you hear it sung with its additional verses, it's really a beautiful song. Most omit the 2nd verse, but the better versions at least do the third verse, which I think is the loveliest one anyhow.

7. Handel's Messiah kicks ass on every Christmas carol ever written
Edited on Mon Dec-22-08 11:25 PM by slackmaster
"And the glory, the glory of the Lord" is the most inspiring chorus ever written IMO.

And I'm an agnostic.

Silent Night is my favorite carol. It's German. I was amused to hear Nina Totenberg singing it on NPR the other day.

26. I tend to think of Handel's Messiah as Easter music.
I have the PERFECT version ... (reciting from memory..) Eugene Ormandy, Philadelphia Philharmonic, Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Eileen Farrell, Martha Lipton, Davis Cunningham, and William Warfield. For years, I had it on open reel tape and couldn't find a better version so I kept the open reel tape player JUST to listen to that. I finally found it on CD.

http://www.amazon.com/Handel-Messiah-Mormon-Tabernacle/dp/B0000024OE/ref=pd_bxgy_m_img_a

As I've noted before, I'm not at all trained in music and can't even play a comb and tissue paper very well. But this version of the Messiah is just very special. While purists might complain it's not complete, and maybe some would say it's done with too much 'schmaltz' ... I LOVE IT.

I doubt if four more talented singers, in concert, were ever assembled. Each soloist was at the top of their game ... and at the top of their profession.

But I definitely think of it as Christmas music, especially with "For unto us a child is born."

77. While the first half (less, actually) is about the birth of Jesus ...
Edited on Tue Dec-23-08 11:27 AM by TahitiNut
... the last half is about "lamb of God" and other crucifixion and resurrection events.

Perhaps the most influential (on my thinking) reason I think of it as Easter music is because of my time in high school and college singing in glee club and choir. We always did this around Easter ... and practice, practice, practice for the weeks leading up to it.

Uh-oh ... I guess I contradict myself now when I said I have no musical training. I guess I did. Sorta. I really don't have a very good voice -- very limited range -- hardly an octave, even. And I had to figure out how to read the music myself ... and even then I was dependent on the pitch pipe and listening to my baritone cohorts. I guess I still think of it as being akin to singing in the shower. I was never able to learn an instrument.

49. I love this piece also
First learned it in Latin while in a boy choir in Germany. I am using it with the spoken Latin and English texts of the seven O Antiphons having the refrain sung and played on hand bells between each Antiphon and then the whole congregation is going to sing "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" at the end of the readings and then we go into Christmas music.

There's nothing remotely like the song.

O come, O come, Emmanuel
And ransom captive Israel

O come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free
Thine own from Satan's tyranny
From depths of Hell Thy people save
And give them victory o'er the grave
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Day-Spring, come and cheer
Our spirits by Thine advent here
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night
And death's dark shadows put to flight.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Key of David, come,
And open wide our heavenly home;
Make safe the way that leads on high,
And close the path to misery.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, O come, Thou Lord of might,
Who to Thy tribes, on Sinai's height,
In ancient times did'st give the Law,
In cloud, and majesty and awe.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep;

The wrong shall fail, the right prevail,
With Peace on earth, good will to men."

76. When I was still a church-goer, the climax of the Christmas season ...
Edited on Tue Dec-23-08 10:52 AM by Deep13
...was on Christmas Eve and everyone was standing in the church. The service had not started yet and the priest and accolytes were just outside of the meeting room. This was a small, New England church without the numerous side rooms of a cathedral. The room was decked out in greenery and pointsettas. Then the organ would begin and as the procession took the first step into the room, the choir began "O come all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant...."

I always thought it would make a good wedding march for a December wedding.

It is something I would still do if the church did not take such a negative view of people who are convinced there is no god.

P.S. And my favorite recorded rendition is from the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

80. Little Drummer Boy - it always tears me up

"Little Drummer Boy" lyrics

http://www.oldielyrics.com/christmas/little_drummer_boy.html

Come they told me
Pa rum pum pum pum
A new born King to see,
Pa rum pum pum pum
Our finest gifts we bring
Pa rum pum pum pum
To lay before the King
Pa rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum
So to honor Him
Pa rum pum pum pum,
When we come.

Little Baby
Pa rum pum pum pum
I am a poor boy too,
Pa rum pum pum pum
I have no gift to bring
Pa rum pum pum pum
That's fit to give our King
Pa rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum
Shall I play for you!
Pa rum pum pum
On my drum.

Mary nodded
Pa rum pum pum pum
The ox and lamb kept time
Pa rum pum pum pum
I played my drum for Him
Pa rum pum pum
I played my best for Him
Pa rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum
Then He smiled at me
Pa rum pum pum pum
Me and my drum.

108. It's a toss up between
"The Holly & the Ivy" and "Go Tell It On the Mountain"

Holly & Ivy lyrics:

The holly and the ivy,
When they are both full grown,
Of all trees that are in the wood,
The holly bears the crown:
O, the rising of the sun,
And the running of the deer
The playing of the merry organ,
Sweet singing in the choir.

The holly bears a blossom,
As white as lily flow'r,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ,
To be our dear Saviour: Refrain
The holly bears a berry,
As red as any blood,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ,
To do poor sinners good: Refrain

The holly bears a prickle,
As sharp as any thorn,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ,
On Christmas Day in the morn: Refrain

The holly bears a bark,
As bitter as the gall,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ,
For to redeem us all: Refrain

The holly and the ivy,
When they are both full grown,
Of all trees that are in the wood,
The holly bears the crown: Refrain

112. I sing in my church choir (alto), and here's our song list for tonight:
The Angel Gabriel an old French carol
Mary, did you Know? modern song, but quite interesting
Away in a Manger not the usual version (and not an improvement)
Gesu Bambino simply beautiful
O Come All Ye Faithful traditional
Do You Hear What I Hear I've heard this one too much and am tired of it
Breath of Heaven for some perverse reason, this reminds me of Brittany Spears
Silent Night fortunately, no one can mess this up
Peace Child a modern monstrosity
O Holy Night my absolute favorite
Joy to the Worldnot the Three Dog Night version

That looks like a line up of songs from when I directed at either a Catholic or an Episcopal Church sounds great! Sometimes I wish I was still directing..I do liturgical consulting so I don't get to sing or direct a choir anymore, but I do a lot of solo work tho...in fact I am soloing the Prophecy of Isaiah tonight.

124. Yes, it's a Catholic church.
And I can only wish our choir director was a little more aggressive in trying to hold the line against the likes of Haugen, Haas, Joncas and the overwhelming influence of OCP.

The day we sing Palestrina, deLassus, Haydn, Bach etc. will be the day I drop dead from shock.

I'm with you..I live in Tacoma, Washington and OCP is all over the place...that stuff is fine for a normal regular (Ordinary Time Sunday) as far as I am concerned...but for a major festival of the church...no! I was in a Boy choir (based in Rome) that traveled all over the world...from that I learned that if you teach a child and constantly expose them to good music then they will appreciate it as an adult.

For the children's service, I lighten up and I am using Mary's Boychild Still, Still Still in German, Jesus, Jesus Rest Your Head and Angels We have Heard on High.
