Madoff Investor Dies After $1.4 Billion Lost
Thierry de la Villehuchet: Madoff Investor Dies After $1.4 Billion Lost

AFP, Bloomberg, Huffington Post | December 23, 2008 01:46 PM

A friend of French money manager Thierry de la Villehuchet told a paper that he committed suicide in his New York office this week. His death has been confirmed by the medical examiner.

Villehuchet had plowed over a billion dollars he managed into Bernie Madoff's Ponzi scheme.

Villehuchet, 65, was the co-founder of Access International, a company that raised funds on European markets to invest with Madoff, the former pillar of Wall Street accused of running a multi-billion-dollar Ponzi scheme.

One of his close friends confirmed a newspaper report that Villehuchet committed suicide early on Tuesday, saying he had spoken to an employee at the company's New York office and that police were at the scene.

MADOFF SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN LET OUT ON BAIL! WILL HE END UP SIPPING COCKTAILS WITH KEN LAY? HE SHOULD STILL BE IN PRISON WITH STRICT SUPERVISON!

4. Yeah well, oddly, noone has ever seen Lay's body so that is open to conjecture.
Intersting that all charges were "dropped" after his "death".

15. Well you can't prosecute a dead person. And yes, his body has been seen.

7. Some speculate he faked his own death, based on the suspicious timing of it.
He died just in time to never have to serve time or pay anyone back.

:tinfoilhat:

NYT:

Mr. Lay's death effectively voids the guilty verdict against him, temporarily thwarting the federal government's efforts to seize his remaining real estate and financial assets, legal experts say. "The death of Mr. Lay in all likelihood will render the government's hard-fought victory null," said Christopher Bebel, a former federal prosecutor based here who specializes in securities fraud...
Any life insurance policies bought by Mr. Lay may also be shielded from federal seizure efforts since state laws normally cover such payments. While jurors found Mr. Lay guilty, his death may also complicate any efforts to go after life insurance proceeds, even if the original policies were acquired with ill-gotten gains.

Also there is the matter of this picture I took while vacationing in the Caymans last summer:

Ok, I made that last part up.

HSBC banker hung himself Sunday. HSBC apparently lost billions with Madoff. COINCIDENCE?

12. I think that the speculation is that some of these deaths weren't actually suicides.

16. money isn't just money,it's our access to freedom, good treatment, good health care
without money you have very little quality of life, really none in america once you become ill or a family member becomes ill

only a very young person can truthfully say "it's only money," once you have seen someone you care about suffer terribly or even die too young because they didn't have money and you didn't have money and were helpless to do anything...well...there is no such thing as "it's only money"

a lot of charities will be closing their doors before this is all over, a lot of causes will be lost and unable to recover, a lot of families will be destroyed

in another universe, on another planet, we might have the luxury of saying "it's only money" but we live here on earth
