Coleman Contemplates Losing: I'll Do Something Else

December 23, 2008 01:25 PM

Addressing reporters for the first time since the recount election began, Senator Norm Coleman seemed to hint that he is bracing himself for the possibility of losing his seat.

"I'm not really agonizing about the outcome," said the Minnesota Republican. "Life goes on, regardless of what your job is. I certainly love what I do. If I can keep doing it, I'll be thrilled, and if not, I'm sure I'll do something else."

The remarks, delivered to a local Fox affiliate, were preceded by a declaration from the Senator that he was confident he will ultimately win his election against challenger Al Franken. Hours later, however, the state's canvassing board closed one of Coleman's few remaining paths to victory, dismissing the Senator's attempt to re-argue 16 disputed ballots.

7. Yep, sounds like Norm's ready for his sinecure
Some right wing think tank has a spot all reserved for the former senator.

4. He's still hoping a crooked judge or two will interfere
and that he'll get to retain his seat against the will of the voters.

It's a shame that Wellstone's seat should be decided by such a close race.

What the hell are people thinking?

5. What was the DFL thinking?
If they had nominated a stronger candidate than Franken, we would not be watching this spectacle! I hope he wins in spite of himself.

Board rejects Coleman's request that it review rulings on 16 ballots

Last update: December 23, 2008 - 12:14 PM

State Canvassing Board members this morning rejected the request of Republican Sen. Norm Coleman's campaign to change their minds on 16 challenged ballots that they had awarded last week either for Democrat Al Franken or not at all.

Eight of those votes they judged for Franken, and the other eight were votes that had been given Coleman on Election Day but judged as either overvotes or undervotes last week by the board.

The board agreed to meet again no later than Dec. 30 to finalize their spreadsheet updating the vote tallies for both candidates, once the withdrawn challenged ballots are reallocated.

Today's action made it more likely that Minnesota will have only one senator in place when Congress meets Jan. 6.
