What is the secret to this ESP puzzle?
Perhaps belongs in Lounge - mods decide.

Sent by a friend -- I KNOW I saw it before, but cannot remember the "solution".

2. All the cards are different after you click an eye. So of course
the card you selected has disappeared - all the original cards have!

3. check the suits of the cards before you pick a card
Edited on Sat Dec-27-08 05:45 PM by merh
then check the suits after your card is "disappeared"

it is not esp, it is just a goofy computer trick - not paying attention to the suits makes it work

13. None of the original cards are in the results.
Think of it this way.

I say pick one of these numbers:
1 2 3 4 5

hurry up pick one....

you got it?

OK- MAGIC TIME

6 7 8 9 0

I bet I made your # disappear.
Is your number in the above list? Of course it isn't.
NONE of the original numbers are.

Just like NONE of the original cards are in the final set of cards.

15. I tried it once, and it immediately
occurred to me that the second set was probably different, so I tried it again, this time writing down the cards shown. Yep. The second set is totally different. I can't believe how many people are bamboozled into thinking this is some truly "psychic" program. And the explanations that think eye movements are being tracked are hilarious.

The gullibility of many people is a little scary.

16. All of the cards are removed, and replaced by different cards.
By only picking one card, you don't pay attention to the others, and it appears to be the only one missing.

Try picking two cards.

17. The secret is Confirmation Bias.
You're probably familiar with the old adage "Programmers try and prove that their code works but testers try and prove that it doesn't". The psychological habit being referred to here is called confirmation bias, and is defined as:

A type of selective thinking whereby one tends to notice and to look for what confirms one's beliefs, and to ignore, not look for, or undervalue the relevance of what contradicts one's beliefs.

Confirmation bias is also one of the many perceptual and cognitive traits that magicians exploit when creating an illusion.

21. It had me fooled there for a minute. I was thinking it to be some sort of statistical thing.
I was looking for patterns and thinking "damn, humans aren't that predictable, are they?"

Then I noticed the trick and felt relieved.
