Rice: People will soon thank Bush for what he's done (CNN)
(CNN) -- Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said that despite President Bush's low approval ratings, people will soon "start to thank this president for what he's done."

"So we can sit here and talk about the long record, but what I would say to you is that this president has faced tougher circumstances than perhaps at any time since the end of World War II, and he has delivered policies that are going to stand the test of time," Rice said in an interview that aired on CBS' "Sunday Morning."

The secretary of state brushed off reports that suggest the United States' image is suffering abroad. She praised the administration's ability to change the conversation in the Middle East.

"This isn't a popularity contest. I'm sorry, it isn't. What the administration is responsible to do is to make good choices about Americans' interests and values in the long run -- not for today's headlines, but for history's judgment," she said.

"And I am quite certain that when the final chapters are written and it's clear that Saddam Hussein's Iraq is gone in favor of an Iraq that is favorable to the future of the Middle East; when the history is written of a U.S.-China relationship that is better than it's ever been; an India relationship that is deeper and better than it's ever been; a relationship with Brazil and other countries of the left of Latin America, better than it's ever been ...

30. Bingo! She is indeed still in love with him. And talking trash about him, or
coming clean about him on the record will cost her access to him later on - (when he's old news and fewer people are looking or even giving a damn anymore). There's one thing she surely knows about him after all this time spent so intimately with him - that he holds grudges and keeps score. Remember what he told Judy Woodruff's husband in a drunken uproar in a public restaurant years ago, in front of their little boy - "you sonuvabitch, I saw what you wrote and I'm not gonna forget it". She knows he'll remember and won't take her calls or let her in the house when laura's gone out shopping, and that they won't be lovers anymore.

You bet she's still in love with him - and probably hoping that somehow their relationship will continue. Especially if laura somehow decides she's had enough.

It will be MOST intriguing to observe the comings and goings of this bunch after bush leaves OUR White House.

One other thing - she HAS to talk up everything that's happened. Miss "we've GOT to have a war." Because she's implicated up to the gap in her front teeth. She HAS to give it a nice folksy we-did-TOO-do-a-good-job spin. Because if true justice were ever served, she'd be going up the river with the rest of 'em.

DAMN I hate these people. They ought to be glad I'M not going to be the next president.

37. I hadn't thought that far ahead: will the relationship continue after he leaves the WH?
Edited on Sun Dec-28-08 06:31 PM by Gman
it's clear that now that it's over, her true love prohibits her from throwing him under the bus like most other high-levelers are now. It's clear she would like it to continue. New circumstances may make that difficult. But then he likely is ambivalent to their relationship as a man that does not do intimacy. This has all the makings of a cheap romance novel. The taboo love affair of a white president and his Black cabinet official and how they struggled for those precious moments alone together. But in the end, their love was lost!

47. He probably thinks that makes him a 21st Century Thomas Jefferson.
Yeah, I think this is it, exactly. She's protecting her future access to him - if any there might be. She does NOT want to burn this bridge. Besides, she's probably well-aware of cheney having admitted openly that he okayed torture, and she's not about to stick her neck out and confirm anything, or defend too much in detail.

Maybe he's even hinted that they should keep in touch because... "well, y'know, laura doesn't understand me, condi - not like you do. And I'm not sure what's gonna happen once we get back to Dallas... for all I know, I'll probably be spending most of my time out at the ranch, and she'll stay in the city... sigh... she never did like it out there. I jus' don't know, condi-gal. Mah li'l cowgirl... you done stuck with me through thick an' thin. I ain't gonna fergit that, heh-heh-heh, heh-heh-heh... 40. Perhaps Condi should ask Dana Perino about the Cuban Missle Crisis
"tougher circumstances than perhaps at anytime since the end of World War II"??? WTF is she talking about. I'd say that being on the brink of nuclear war with the Soviet Union was a little tougher than what Bush has dealt with, and his circumstances were largely his fault. Isn't she supposed to be some sort of expert on the Russians?

43. Okay, let me get this straight...
Because no one provided Shrub with the flight and seat numbers, we're missing 2800-plus Americans, three entire buildings, a huge chunk out of another one and four airliners from 9/11.

Our standing in the world is gone.

We're on the cusp of the Second Great Depression.

We've turned Iraq into North Somalia.

The Afghani Taliban is as strong as it ever was.

We've killed a million plus Iraqis, tens of thousands of Afghanis, and somewhere between 4000 and 5000 American troops.

"Gulag" has become a word in the English language.

And we're supposed to THANK George Bush for that?

54. The insanity runs deep
They always seem to remind us that "this is not a popularity contest" but then they try to spin all the crap that they have done into something that we will eventually "like" them for. Sorry idiots, this is not Harry Truman part 2. This is more like Nixon's lawlessness, mixed with Hoover's stupid idealism. Sorry pugs you are going to be keeping Andrew Johnson and James Buchanan company in the history books as one of the worst administrations.
