Obama should not be vacationing.
people are suffering in this country. There's a crisis in the ME. He should never vacation again. He shouldn't go to his frivolous workouts. He certainly shouldn't be having any inaugural festivities. When he's in the White House he shouldn't hold any state dinners. He shouldn't be photographed having a good time. He should never play golf or basketball or go body surfing. Others are suffering. In solidarity, Obama should make every attempt to suffer too.

1. And too bad he wasn't around when his beloved grandma
passed away. He shouldn't have had a memorial for her. Other things are more important. I need him to get focused!!

2. This might be his last chance for a peaceful vacation for quite a while...
After 1/20/09, he's going to be up to his ass in problems to solve.

4. Hair Shirts or sackcloth and ashes.
Self-Flagellation with razor-tipped flails. One of them Opus Dei leg bracelets. Walk around Washington with a cactus on his back. Get crucified, with real nails, every Easter. Perhaps take part in that Hindu-based ritual where they sticks like swords, axes and bikes through their cheeks.

There is so much he can bring to the national dialogue, it's stunning.

5. He should be running around with his hair on fire
shrieking about all our problems instead of rebuilding his strength prior to assuming the actual job.

He needs to let us know he's paying attention, not lollygagging on some beach while he throws his granny's ashes to the wind.

9. Ah...OK...but
At the moment, there is not all that much he can do. He's selected his cabinet members. Bushit is still the POTUS.

So, he's in Hawaii on a short vacation. He poured his grandmother's ashes into the Pacific Ocean, and he and his family are having a bit of peace before the proverbial shit hits the fan on January 20.

I have no doubt whatsoever that he is actively involved in planning what is going to happen, starting on 1/21/09. I'm certain he's communicating with his cabinet daily. I'm convinced that he's communicating with congressional leaders. On the 21st, I expect that we will hear a great deal about what has been going on in this interregnum.

Right now, he can't really be making lots of speeches. He can't be enacting any policies. You'll hear a pretty remarkable speech, I think, at the inauguration, and see a lot of action in the following 30 days or so.

Let the man have a few days with his family, OK? He's not going to be seeing all that much of them for a while.

14. I totally support him. He lost his next to last closest ancestry and it's time
to take care of the soul and recover.

Hawaii isn't isolated from communications.

I am perfectly fine with him giving himself and his family some warm air and beautiful sights to enjoy. I don't believe that he is inaccessible and not working.

We only have one President at a time as his staff says.

And he is already getting CIA briefings - I'm sure he didn't tell them to stop.

that there are people here who do not recognize :sarcasm: when they see it.

You wouldn't think you'd have needed the :sarcasm: icon for your post but apparently some people didn't understand it as :sarcasm:

Unless of course you didn't mean it as :sarcasm:. In that case, never mind the :sarcasm: smilie.

20. Sarcasm does not translate too well into print.
You have to really ham it up in print. Say the wildest stuff. Typically sarcasm requires a turn of inflection in live interaction. You can't replicate it too well in print. I got your sarcasm, but some people miss it then you get an entirely different thread than the one you wanted. :toast:

23. Very good point...
Satire needs to be a little more over the top than this OP. I have no doubt that there are those right here on DU who might make a very similar post, but in all sincerity.

When I'm in doubt whether a post is satirical, I simply post a straightforward response.

But Obama could come forward and say something about these atrocities. Making a joke about it does not change the obvious.

28. He can't.
Anything he says will be taken as an official government position by some.
Even if says a one line prayer, it will be misconstrued. The situation is
FUBAR. However, he and his foreign policy team are going to have to come right
out of the gate with a statement on 1/20. Talk about an unstable situation.

30. How Dare you
Were was the outrage with all the vacation time Bush took? He had more vacation time than any other president. While on vacation during Katrina he couldn't othered.be bothered until Rove showed him the footage of what was going on. He was having a good time. He finally went up in a plane and didn't bother to go to see the people until a week or 2 after. People were dying and he couldn't be bothered. Also I don't begrudge Bush vacations and I cer tainly won't begrudge Obama. Everyone needs to have some down time to recharge. Obama will take his vacation time but I think he won't be on to many vacations. He is like Clinton. Both he and Clinton are readers and involved unlike Bush.
