Dec 30): Three men arrested early Tuesday morning after attempting to break into two convenience stores were caught after awakening an off-duty Knox County Sheriff’s detective.
Shortly after 3 a.m., the Knox County Sheriff's Office received a call from the owner of the Hope General Store, who lives above the store, after someone triggered the burglar alarm by breaking the glass front door of the business, according to sheriff’s Deputy John Palmer.
About 30 minutes later, as Deputy Matthew Elwell was working on the Hope call, a similar incident occurred at the Mic Mac Market on Route 17 in Union. The sound of banging on the door awoke an off-duty detective who lives upstairs. The detective was able to get a description of the vehicle as it left the parking lot and pursued it, according to a report from the Knox County Sheriff’s Office.
Maine State Police Trooper Jeremiah Wesbrock, who was patrolling on Route 17 near the Hope and Rockport town line, stopped the vehicle.
