Reid Blasts Blagojevich For Making Pick

The Huffington Post | Rachel Weiner | December 30, 2008 02:15 PM

Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid released a statement today in response to reports that Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich will nominate Roland Burris to fill the vacant Illinois Senate seat, calling the move "truly regrettable" and "unfair." Earlier this month, all 50 members of the Senate Democratic Caucus called on Blagojevich to step down and under no circumstance make an appointment to fill the seat.

The full statement:

"It is truly regrettable that despite requests from all 50 Democratic Senators and public officials throughout Illinois, Gov. Blagojevich would take the imprudent step of appointing someone to the United States Senate who would serve under a shadow and be plagued by questions of impropriety. We say this without prejudice toward Roland Burris's ability, and we respect his years of public service. But this is not about Mr. Burris; it is about the integrity of a governor accused of attempting to sell this United States Senate seat. Under these circumstances, anyone appointed by Gov. Blagojevich cannot be an effective representative of the people of Illinois and, as we have said, will not be seated by the Democratic Caucus.

"Next week we will start one of the most important debates of the year - outlining an economic recovery plan to create jobs and invest in America. And in the coming weeks, we will be working to protect homeowners and consumers, make America more energy independent, strengthen our national security, and improve health care and educational opportunities. There is much work to do and a lot at stake. It is thus critical that Illinois and every other state have two seated Senators without delay.

"We again urge Gov. Blagojevich to not make this appointment. It is unfair to Mr. Burris, it is unfair to the people of Illinois and it will ultimately not stand. The governor must put the interests of the people of Illinois and all Americans first by stepping aside now and letting his successor appoint someone who we will seat."

1. What part of legal does Harry Reid
not understand. Damn I hope he falls on his own sword over this one. Reid can't do a damn thing about this appointment. I hope both Blago and Reid emerge as the biggest losers here.

5. The Senate is the final judge of its own elections.
They are under no obligation to accept Mr. Burris' credentials.

12. They might find that the SCOTUS disagrees with that assessment
Given that Blagojevich is the current sitting governor of Illinois and that he can, as governor, appoint an interim Senator, I'm afraid they're up against it. As far as I know, Blago hasn't even been impeached yet, much less convicted.

This is the ultimate states' rights issue, frankly, and the Senate needs to be very, very cautious in dealing with a current sitting governor of a state. Blago may actually end up hanging onto his seat.

22. Not if they read Article I Section 5 of the Constitution
Each House shall be the Judge of the Elections, Returns and Qualifications of its own Members

The Senate is under no obligation to accept whoever Blago sends their way.

15. Who???
Who do the republicans have that has any reasonable shot at winning? Seriously. The only person that might have a chance is Edgar and I’m pretty sure he has no interest in holding another public office. JBT couldn’t beat Rod and she was the last repub to hold a state office. Poshard, maybe, that would be about as close to a republican I could see winning.

I think the IL republicans have figured out anyone who’s last name is Ryan can’t win. Although, that took two elections. The ice cream man has failed multiple times. Unless there’s someone I’m forgetting. Does anyone even remember who ran against Durbin? I don’t. This seat will go to a Democrat one way or another.

3. Reid just hates to have to deal with anything. Usually he relies on the GOP to run things

Reid is going to have to deal with this himself and he is pissed so he is throwing a tantrum and demanding Blago take it back.

Typical Reid-like behavior.

4.  Another strongly worded statement from Reid
I really can't take him seriously these days since
Republicans and the Bush regime don't either.

I think Illinois will take the lead on this mess.

10. Other than issuing strongly worded statements, he really doesn't have much power in this matter
What would you suggest he do?

But that was a long time ago. This is really just Reid politically pandering
trying to act like a leader.

9. What is the governor accused of? Having
evil thoughts? Using foul language? Trying to usurp Harry Reid? I have yet to hear just exactly what the governor did that was illegal? I am not trying to clear the man of anything. It just reminds me so much of what the Republicans did to Bill Clinton regarding impeachment. Clinton was tried in the media also.

13. Blagojevich is accused of
and charged with conspiring to profit from his authority, conspiring to devise and participate in a scheme to defraud the State of Illinois, and soliciting bribes (worded in the complaint as soliciting and demanding a thing of value).

Here's the complaint: http://www.prairie-advocate-news.com/pdf/Blagojevich_Complaint.pdf

20. The impeachment hearings are shown here. Blago has hundreds of pay for play

situations where there are mountains of proof that the man will not grant a license unless a check has been deposited in Blago's account.

Here in Illinois we KNOW Blago is crooked. His favorable rating has been at 9% for a long long time.

The selling of the Senate seat is not the deed for which he is being impeached. His greed and corruption over the years is what is being discussed.

11. I don't think that Reid objects to Burris, he objects to Blago appointing him
If Blago appoints him and the Senate seats him, he will be an ineffective Senator and always be under suspicion, through no fault of his own. I think this is probably a legit nomination from Blago, made for Blago to say "See? I didn't sell the seat". Unfortunately, it doesn't matter. Blago is a dirty politician, and anything he does is suspect.

I am not defending Reid, I really wish the Dems would replace him. But I see why they are doing it. I imagine that Reid talked to Durbin before he issued a statement, so I'm hoping that Durbin agreed since Durbin is the other Illinois Senator.
