Footage of BART police shooting suspect at Fruitvale Station (shot in the back while on the ground)

this is very disturbing (at about 3:00 on the video) and i am so damned angry.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/01/04/BA0R153LGU.DTL&tsp=1

from the article:

Video footage, first shown by KTVU-TV, shows officers forcing Grant to the ground and trying to hold him down. The officer who shot Grant appears to try to put cuffs on him before drawing his weapon and firing. In the video, Grant appears to struggle with the officers, though it is unclear exactly what he was doing.

Burris said a single bullet went through Grant's lower back, hit the ground and ricocheted through his upper body. Grant died at Highland Hospital in Oakland several hours later.

Among other things, BART police are looking into the possibility that the officer who shot Grant thought he was pulling the trigger of a Taser stun gun, according to a person familiar with the investigation.

A BART police officer struggling to handcuff a 22-year-old man stood up over the facedown Hayward resident and fired a single shot into his back while a handful of officers watched, a video taken by a train passenger apparently shows.

2. it is unconscionable!
to shoot a guy in the back while he's laying on the ground? these are trained law enforcement officers and he shoots the guy?

this is so maddening.

i don't know if i'm going to be able to look a BART policeman in the eye for a while now.

4. Me neither CreekDog.
It is so senseless and the guy was not doing anything wrong. The video shows that the guys that were taken off the train were cooperating.

10. FWIW, the reaction of the other cops to one of their own
firing his weapon, is weird to me.

They didn't seem to react at all.

12. that was the big thing I noticed, too
the video was a little confusing and besides the noise of the gunshot, I wouldn't have known that the guy was shot. Well, there were a few in the crowd yelling but the people that you can see (the cops) showed no reaction.

11. That was NOT police brutality.
Nope, you cannot call that police brutality.

That was an open and shut case example of first degree homicide.

The shooter should face the death penalty under the current California law.

14. Here's his punishment.
He'll get a sternly-worded letter from his sergeant, and he'll get a paid vacation suspension with pay.

A few weeks from now, he'll be back on the force, ready to kill again.

Anybody wonder why I detest cops these days?
