"How dare those Christian settlers defend themselves against the arrows of those savages?"
Those tribes, who aren't Christians, hell we aren't even sure if they are human, are repeatedly disturbing our peaceful expansion into our manifest destiny with their attacks on our treks and settlements. They brought the smallpox we spread in their villages upon themselves...

:sarcasm:

1. Very apt analogy
I've often wondered what would have happened if the Native Americans had had technology equal to the Europeans and had had advanced knowledge of what they were planning to do. My guess is that we would have had our own version of Palestine/Israel right here.

3. Not quite
since the Native People, by and large, did not have modern weapons, and since many tribes were unaware of the plans and designs of the settlers, they were overcome rather quickly by the settlers. My point was that if the Natives had the information and technology that the Palestinians have, settlers and Natives would likely still be at war. Remember, when the Lakota have their "salute the flag" ceremony at pow-wows, they aren't saluting the US flag, but rather the one Crazy Horse captured at Little Big Horn.

5. but close
bows and arrows versus long guns and cannon. Primitive rockets versus a superpower-equipped military. Close enough to be a useful metaphor.

4. except that Jews have a continuous and long connection with the
land in question- unlike the Europeans re the Americas. That by no means is an edorsement of Israeli actions either currently or over the past four decades, but it is a salient fact.

6. No, it's exactly the same for those motivated to come to America for religious reasons
The New World literally WAS the new Jerusalem for them.

So, I see little difference.

The history is at least as complicated though as many native American communities were already wiped-out and/or devastated by disease even before the 'plantation'. Even given that, the history of American-Indian resistance was long, bloody and began almost right away... the Pequod War, King Phillip's war, and the constant push that equated the genocide of a people.

On a personal note, I completely and utterly condemn Hamas AND the right-wing Israeli government. Once again, both groups are holding civilians hostage to their pride and ambitions. The sooner both are gone from the stage the better-off everyone will be.

7. Actually, none of the equivalent technology scenarios work
if you don't also include equivalent immunology.
